THE PA CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT FOUNDATION IS DEDICATED THE RESTORATION OF THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT TO THE EASTERN FOREST. OUR WORK INCLUDES SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. IN 2019, THE PA/NJ CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT FOUNDATION CONTINUED WORKING TO DEVELOP A BLIGHT RESISTANT AMERICAN CHESTNUT TREE. 900 SEEDLINGS WERE PLANTED IN VARIOUS ORCHARDS, INCLUDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF 2 NEW RESEARCH ORCHARDS. IN THE SEED ORCHARDS, OVER 1,500 INOCULATIONS WERE COMPLETED AND OVER 1,200 SMALL STEM ASSAY INOCULATIONS. 2,550 STEMS WERE REMOVED FROM AN EXISTING ORCHARD IN ANTICIPATION OF CONVERTING THIS AREA TO A NEW GERMPLASM CONSERVATION ORCHARD. ADDITIONAL WORK INCLUDES AN ONGOING EXPERIMENT ADDRESSING THE MOVEMENT OF HERBICIDES BETWEEN SEEDLINGS THROUGH ROOT-GRAFTS, PROPAGATION OF OVER 100 SEEDLINGS FOR GRAFTING PURPOSES IN 2020, PROPAGATION OF SEEDLINGS FOR CEREMONIAL AND DEMONSTRATION PLANTINGS, AND CONTROLLED POLLINATIONS BETWEEN B3F2 PARENTS.IN 2019, THE PA/NJ CHAPTER OF TACF SHARED THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT AT 12 PUBLIC OUTREACH EVENTS, THROUGHOUT PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY INCLUDING THEPA FARM SHOW AND PENN STATE AG PROGRESS DAYS EACH, HOSTING THOUSANDS OF ATTENDEES. WITH THE HELP OF OUR EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEERS AND CITIZEN SCIENTISTS, THE CHAPTER CONTINUES TO EDUCATE SMALLER COMMUNITY GROUPS THROUGH PRESENTATIONS AND PLANTING PROJECTS. AND THE CHAPTER CONTINUES TO EDUCATE MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC THROUGH OUR PRINT NEWSLETTER AND DIGITAL RESOURCES WHICH INCLUDE OUR WEBSITE, MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER AND FACEBOOK PAGE.
