Part 3 - Line 4a
EXHIBITION & PRESERVATION: IN FY22, THE FRICK OFFERED FOUR EXTRAORDINARY EXHIBITIONS IN THE FRICK ART MUSEUM AND ONE IN THE CAR AND CARRIAGE MUSEUM, WITH ACCOMPANYING INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. THE EXHIBITIONS INCLUDED RECKONING: GRIEF AND LIGHT, A MULTISENSORY INSTALLATION OF SCULPTURE BY ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE VANESSA GERMAN EXPLORING THE CAPACITY OF MUSEUMS TO FUNCTION AS SPACES OF PUBLIC RECKONING; FRIDA KAHLOAN INTIMATE PORTRAIT: THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS, PROVIDING RARE AND MOVING INSIGHT INTO THE PERSONAL LIFE OF ONE OF THE 20TH CENTURY'S MOST ICONIC ARTISTS THROUGH 115 PHOTOGRAPHS SELECTED FROM HER PRIVATE ALBUMS; CAST IN CHROME: THE ART OF HOOD ORNAMENTS, EXAMINING THE ARTISTRY OF DECORATIVE AUTOMOBILE ACCESSORIES; SPORTING FASHION: OUTDOOR GIRLS 1800 TO 1960, EXPLORING THE EVOLUTION OF WOMEN'S SPORTING ATTIRE IN WESTERN FASHION; AND VICTORIAN RADICALS: FROM THE PRE-RAPHAELITES TO THE ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT, FEATURING HYPER-REALISTIC, JEWEL-TONED, AND EMOTIONALLY IMPACTFUL WORKS OF THE PRE-RAPHAELITE BROTHERHOOD. THE EXHIBITIONS AND RELATED PROGRAMMING THAT WERE PRESENTED IN FY22 BEGAN TO MOVE THE NEEDLE - TO CHANGE THE PERCEPTION OF THE FRICK AMONG PEERS AND MUSEUMGOERS AND BEGAN TO EARN US CREDIBILITY WITH THE BIPOC VISITORS AND PARTNERS WHO ARE VISITING. IN ADDITION TO THE CONTINUED CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE MAGNIFICENT GROUNDS AND OUR PERMANENT COLLECTION OF ART AND HISTORICAL BUILDINGS, CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE FRICK'S HISTORIC SITE AND BUILDINGS CONTINUED THIS YEAR, INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL REPAIRS AT CLAYTON TO THE JULIET BALCONY AND HENRY FRICK'S BATHROOM. WE MADE PROGRESS ON OUR PARKING LOT AND SITE WIDE LIGHTING PROJECT AS WE WORK TOWARD CREATING A SAFER AND MORE INCLUSIVE CAMPUS FOR OUR VISITORS AND STAFF. SMALLER PROJECTS ARE IDENTIFIED ON A YEARLY BASIS AND ARE ACCOMPLISHED AS PART OF THE OPERATING BUDGET. LARGER PROJECTS FOR WHICH FUNDS MUST BE RAISED OR EARMARKED ARE IDENTIFIED THROUGH AN ONGOING CAPITAL BUDGET PROCESS.
VISITOR EXPERIENCE & INTERPRETATION: AS WE CONTINUE TO ASPIRE TO ACHIEVE OUR VISION - OUR EXPERIENCES OF DISCOVERY, INSPIRATION AND LEARNING WILL BE ESSENTIAL TO PEOPLE'S LIVES AND TO THE CULTURAL FABRIC OF OUR REGION, THE FRICK ART & HISTORICAL CENTER SHARES AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES WITH ART, HISTORY, AND NATURE, AS WELL AS A COLLECTION OF FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS, CARS, CARRIAGES, HISTORICAL OBJECTS, AND METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED BUILDINGS, GROUNDS, AND GARDENS. MORE THAN BRIDGING THE PHYSICAL SEPARATION CAUSED BY COVID, IN FISCAL YEAR 2022 (FY22) WE SOUGHT TO ENSURE THAT DIVERSE AUDIENCES OF ALL AGES, ABILITIES, AND RACES WOULD FEEL WELCOME AND INCLUDED AT THE FRICK. FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMS, REDUCED TEACHER PROGRAM AND MEMBERSHIP FEES, AND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LOW-INCOME, AT-RISK GROUPS ARE HELPING US BROADEN OUR CONSTITUENCY AND DEEPEN OUR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. THE FRICK WELCOMED 64,124 VISITORS ON SITE - MORE THAN FOUR TIMES WHAT WE EXPERIENCED IN 2020. OUR ONLINE AUDIENCE ALSO REMAINED STRONG AND SURPASSED ONE MILLION POINTS OF VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT IN 2021. THE CAFE AT THE FRICK REOPENED AFTER A 17-MONTH CLOSURE IN LATE JULY 2021, WELCOMING GUESTS IN A FRESH AND REMODELED SPACE WITH A MORE CASUAL MENU. WE HOSTED WINTERFEST, A NEW SITE-WIDE EVENT, AND BROUGHT MANY FAMILIES TO OUR CAMPUS BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S DAY WHEN STUDENTS WERE ON BREAK FROM SCHOOL. HUNDREDS OF WINTERFEST ATTENDEES EXPERIENCED THE MUSEUMS, ICE SKATED, ENJOYED CARRIAGE RIDES AND HOT CHOCOLATE, AND SPENT TIME TOGETHER. SUMMER FRIDAYS AT THE FRICK, A SIGNATURE PIECE OF THE FRICK'S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS, HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT SUMMER TRADITION FOR FAMILIES. WHILE 2021'S SUMMER CONCERT PROGRAM CONTINUED IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT, THE FRICK CREATED AN EXPERIENCE THAT CAPTURED THE DIVERSITY AND TALENT OF OUR ON-SITE EVENINGS. CLAYTON WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS BECAUSE OF COVID-RELATED CHALLENGES. WE REOPENED THE SPACE IN EARLY 2022 AND BEGAN REIMAGINING THE INTERPRETATION OF THE FRICK FAMILY MANSION, WHICH STANDS ON PITTSBURGH'S FORMER MILLIONAIRES' ROW, AN AVENUE THAT NOW SEPARATES THE LARGELY WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD OF POINT BREEZE AND THE PREDOMINANTLY BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD OF HOMEWOOD. BY OFFERING HOUSE TOURS FOCUSED NOT ONLY ON THE FRICKS, BUT ALSO ON LATE 19TH-CENTURY PITTSBURGH MORE GENERALLY, AND BY DIVERSIFYING OUR INTERPRETATION TEAM, WE HOPE TO ENGAGE A WIDER, MORE DIVERSE AUDIENCE, INCLUDING THE YOUNG PEOPLE ESSENTIAL TO OUR FUTURE SUCCESS.
