THE COLONIAL PENNSYLVANIA FARMSTEAD IS A LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM WHOSE PURPOSE IS TO ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF 1760-1790 FARM LIFE IN SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA BY PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY RESEARCH BASED EXPERIENCE TO THE PUBLIC.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
FARMING PROGRAM - CPF DEMONSTRATES AND ALLOWS THE PUBLIC TO PARTICIPATE IN FIELD PREPARATION, PLANTING, HARVESTING AND PROCESSING CROPS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN GROWN ON AN 18TH CENTURY FARM. THIS INTERPRETATION, MADE POSSIBLE BY THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF OUR FARM IS CENTRAL TO OUR PROGRAMMING AND MISSION. WE RAISE SHEEP, FOWL, OXEN AND HORSES. OUR LARGER ANIMALS ARE USED AS DRAFT ANIMALS. IN 2022 WE EXPANDED OUR FARMING PROGRAM WITH INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION FROM THE PUBLIC.
WEEKEND EVENTS - ON WEEKENDS, CPF DEMONSTRATED FARMING ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS SPINNING, WOODWORKING AND BLACKSMITHING. WE ALSO DEMONSTRATE HEARTH COOKING AND FOOD PRESERVATION. MUCH OF THIS INTERPRETATION WAS PERFORMED BY VOLUNTEERS. WORKSHOPS WERE HELD TO TEACH THE PUBLIC HOW TO DO THESE SKILLS THEMSELVES.
EDUCATIONAL - OUR SCHOOL FIELD TRIP VOLUME CONTINUED TO INCREASE POST-PANDEMIC AS THE YEAR PROGRESSED. NEW EDUCATION STAFF WERE HIRED IN ANTICIPATION OF A RETURN OF STUDENTS. WE DEVELOPED SOME NEW PROGRAMMING THAT WAS FAVORABLY REVIEWED. SUMMER CAMP WAS FULL AND NEW PROGRAMMING WAS ADDED.
