PRESERVE, INTERPRET, AND COMMUNICATE LOCAL HISTORY OF BEVERLY, MORGAN PARK, WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, AND MT. GREENWOOD NEIGHBORHOODS.

PUBLIC EDUCATION: IN 2021, THE SOCIETY'S BUILDING WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR MUCH OF THE YEAR, SO PUBLIC EDUCATION EFFORTS CENTERED ON PUBLICATION OF ARTICLES ABOUT LOCAL HISTORY. ORIGINAL AND SHARED ITEMS WERE MOSTLY PUBLISHED ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS WHERE POSTS NUMBERED OVER 100. THEY INCLUDED: AN ARTICLE ABOUT HERBERT SPENCER GRAVER, THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE SOCIETY'S HISTORIC HOUSE; A SERIES ABOUT THE HOFER FAMILY, EARLY LOCAL RESIDENTS AND ACTIVISTS IN THE KINDERGARTEN MOVEMENT; A SERIES THE HISTORY OF CHICAGO WARDS, INCLUDING THE CITY'S ANNEXATION OF THE TOWNS INCLUDING BEVERLY, MORGAN PARK, AND WASHINGTON HEIGHTS; AND A LOOK AT LOCAL NEW YEARS' CELEBRATIONS 100 YEARS AGO. THE LOCAL HISTORY EXHIBIT FROM 2020 REMAINED IN PLACE AND WAS AVAILABLE TO INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS BY PRIVATE APPOINTMENT.


GRAVER-DRISCOLL HOUSE PRESERVATION AND MAINTENANCE: THE SOCIETY RESIDES IN A LARGE DESIGNATED HISTORIC DISTRICT, AND OWNS GRAVER-DRISCOLL HOUSE WHICH SERVES IS ITS BASE OF ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS AND AS A MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE. THE BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT IN ITS OWN RIGHT; IT WAS DESIGNED BY NOTED ARCHITECT JOHN TODD HETHERINGTON AND IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD.


HISTORIC RESEARCH: RESEARCH OF LOCAL HISTORY INVOLVING PEOPLE, PLACES, EVENTS, BUILDINGS AND ARTIFACTS IS A SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY OF THE SOCIETY. RESEARCH MAY BE UNDERTAKEN IN THE PLANNING OF EXHIBITS OR PROGRAMS; TO SUPPORT THE ORGANIZATION'S PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL INITIATIVES AND OBSERVANCES; OR TO DOCUMENT THE ORGANIZATION'S COLLECTION. THE SOCIETY ALSO ROUTINELY RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS AND REQUESTS FROM INDIVIDUALS, OFTEN CONCERNING THEIR RESIDENCES OR OTHER BUILDINGS. IN 2021, OVER 1,000 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE SPENT ON LOCAL HISTORIC RESEARCH.
