CHESAPEAKE HUMANE SOCIETY WAS FORMED TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF COMPANION ANIMALS THROUGHOUT HAMPTON ROADS. THE SOCIETY IS A COMMUNITY-BASED CORPORATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF ANIMALS THROUGH A SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM, PROVIDING FOR ADOPTIONS OF ANIMALS, OPERATING A LOW COST ANIMAL SURGERY CLINIC, AND PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO THE COMMUNITY.

LOW COST VETERINARY CLINIC. THERE WERE 3,965 SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES, 100 DENTAL PROCEDURES, AND 51 HEARTWORM TREATMENTS COMPLETED DURING THE YEAR. ALSO, 1,412 PETS WERE MICROCHIPPED, 2,844 RABIES VACCINES PERFORMED, AND 3,677 HEARTWORM TESTS CONDUCTED IN 2021.
SHELTER PROGRAM FOR CATS, DOGS, AND SMALL ANIMALS. MAJORITY OF PETS IN THE SHELTER PROGRAM ARE TRANSFERRED IN FROM LOCAL SHELTER PARTNERS. IN 2021, CHESAPEAKE HUMANE SOCIETY CARED FOR 656 PETS AND HAD A LIVE RELEASE RATE OF 93.2%.
OUTREACH INITIATIVES INCLUDE A VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, HUMANE EDUCATION, AND A PET PANTRY. CHESAPEAKE HUMANE SOCIETY ESTIMATES THAT IT RECEIVED 454 VOLUNTEER HOURS AND 16,812 FOSTER CARE HOURS FROM ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. THE HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM WAS PAUSED IN 2021 DUE TO COVID-19. THE PET PANTRY DISTRIBUTED 5,841 POUNDS OF FOOD TO FAMILIES IN NEED AND LOCAL ANIMAL WELFARE PARTNERS.
