OUR ACADEMY WAS FOUNDED IN 1966 AND CURRENTLY HAS ACTIVE AFFILIATIONS WITH 70 OF THE APPROXIMATELY 150 ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY TRAINING CENTERS THAT TRAIN PATHOLOGY RESIDENTS IN CLINICAL PATHOLOGY. FROM ITS ORIGIN, IT HAS FOLLOWED THE MISSION STATEMENT OF BEING DEDICATED TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP IN LABORATORY MEDICINE. WE FOLLOW THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ACADEMY. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THIS DEDICATION HAS BEEN DRIVEN BY THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 1. TO ENCOURAGE AND ADVANCE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EDUCATION IN LABORATORY MEDICINE IN MEDICAL SCHOOL AND RELATED CURRICULA. 2. TO ENCOURAGE AND PROMOTE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF RESIDENT TRAINING AND POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION OF PHYSICIANS AND SCIENTISTS IN CLINICAL PATHOLOGY AT UNIVERSITIES AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS. 3. DURING THE YEAR THAT ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2020, THE ACADEMY PROVIDED SERVICES TO APPROXIMATELY 286 ACTIVE MEMBERS AND 189 ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. OVER 300 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDED THE FIRST VIRTUAL ACLPS ANNUAL MEETING ("LAB MEDICINE") HELD ON JUNE 25, 2020 USING THE EX ORDO ONLINE CONFERENCE PLATFORM. THE GOAL OF THE MEETING WAS TO CONTINUE DISSEMINATE AND SHARE SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL INFORMATION THAT HELPS TO ADVANCE THE ACADEMY'S CAUSE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THE REGISTRATION FOR THIS MEETING WAS FREE FOR ALL MEMBERS. THE TWO KEYNOTE SPEAKERS, ESTHER BABADY, PHD AND ELDAD HOD, MD, GAVE PERTINENT TALKS ON THE CHALLENGES OF MOLECULAR AND SEROLOGIC TESTING OF SARS-COV-2. THE ELLIS BENSON AWARD WAS AWARDED TO JEANNE HENDRICKSON, M.D, A WORLD RENOWNED EXPERT ON RED BLOOD CELL ALLOIMMUNIZATION. THE ACADEMY ALSO CONTINUED THE PAUL E. STRANDJORD YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANT PROGRAM THIS YEAR AND PROVIDED TWO 7,500 RESEARCH GRANTS TO PROGRAM AWARDEES IN 2020. A THIRD AWARD IS PENDING. GRANT SUBMISSIONS WERE ALSO MANAGED THROUGH THE EX ORDO ONLINE SYSTEM TO FACILITATE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION. ACLPS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT CO-SPONSORED EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS AT THE ASCP ANNUAL MEETING. A 2020 CO-SPONSORED EDUCATION SESSION TITLED "MODERN MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY - IMPROVING PATIENT CARE BY LEVERAGING RAPID DIAGNOSTICS AND BACTERIAL GENOMICS" WAS GIVEN BY PRESENTERS DRS. SCOTT W. LONG AND RANDALL OLSEN AT THE 2020 VIRTUAL ASCP ANNUAL MEETING. ACLPS CONTINUES TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL REVIEW ARTICLES FOR PUBLICATION IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PATHOLOGY (AJCP).
