ECKLEY MINERS' VILLAGE ASSOCIATES, INC. PROMOTES AN INTEREST IN THE HISTORY OF THE ANTHRACITE COAL REGION OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANTHRACITE INDUSTRY; FOSTERS AN INTEREST IN THE HISTORY OF THE ETHNIC GROUPS WHO PIONEERED THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION AND THE INDUSTRY; COLLECTS, CONSTRUCTS AND AND RECONSTRUCTS THE ARTIFACTS AND HISTORIC SITES THAT ARE CONNECTED WITH THE INDUSTRY AND THE REGION; AND AIDS IN THE PROMOTION, DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF A MUSEUM, VILLAGE AND COMPANY STORE/GIFT SHOP.VOLUNTEERS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF ECKLEY. IN RECENT YEARS VOLUNTEERS HAVE, AT THEIR OWN COST, RESTORED A 19TH CENTURY COMPANY STORE AND STOCKED IT WITH THEIR OWN 19TH CENTURY ARTIFACTS. THE BUILDING IS OPEN ON TOURS AND DURING OUR MANY EVENTS. ECKLEY ALSO HAS A 19TH CENTURY BLACKSMITH SHOP THAT WAS BUILT BY A VOLUNTEER WHO ALSO IS OUR RESIDENT BLACKSMITH.OUR MUSEUM IS OPERATED 95% BY VOLUNTEERS. THEY DONATE THEIR TIME, PURCHASE THEIR OWN COSTUMES AND CONTRIBUTE IN MANY WAYS TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS SITE. WE HAVE AN ACTING GROUP, TOUR GUIDES, RESTORATION GROUP AND FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE. WITHOUT THEM THIS SITE COULD NOT FUNCTION AS THERE ARE ONLY FIVE COMMONWEALTH EMPLOYEES WORKING AT ECKLEY.WE ALSO DO OFF SITE PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS AND OTHER HISTORICAL SOCIETIES AS PART OF OUR PRIMARY EDUCATION MISSION.ALL OF OUR FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES ARE CENTERED AROUND OUR MANY EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND ARE ALL STAFFED BY VOLUNTEERS.
