THE MISSION OF THE SOCIETY IS TO COLLECT, PRESERVE, INTERPRET AND PROMOTE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ABOUT THE HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. THE VISION OF THE SOCIETY IS TO BECOME A NATIONAL MODEL FOR DEMONSTRATING HOW HISTORY, STORY-TELLING, MATERIAL CULTURE AND PRESERVATION PROMOTES SOCIAL WELL-BEING, SERVICE AND CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT WITH LOCAL RESOURCES.

LIBRARY-PRESERVATION OF ARCHIVAL RECORDS, MANUSCRIPTS, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, MICROFILMED NEWSPAPERS, WILLS, DEEDS, ETC. THE LIBRARY STAFF MAKES THE COLLECTIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC WHILE PROVIDING SERVICES SUCH AS MICROFILM MACHINES, ANCESTRY, ZEROXING, MAIL INQUIRIES AND VISITOR ASSISTANCE. PATRONS SEARCH ON PAST PERFECT SOFTWARE ON LIBRARY COMPUTERS.
MUSEUM - PRESERVATION AND STORAGE OF OVER 10,000 ARTIFACTS IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. MAINTAIN 18 GALLERIES OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. SPECIAL CHANGING EXHIBITS ARE DONE ANNUALLY. COLLECTIONS, RESEARCH, PAST PERFECT CATALOGING, STORAGE INVENTORIES AND PRESERVATION ARE DONE BY STAFF.
EDUCATION CENTER - ABOUT 8,000 SCHOOL STUDENTS, VISITORS AND MEMBERS ARE SERVED EACH YEAR. PROVIDE MUSEUM TOURS, WALKING TOURS, SCHOOL CLASSROOM VISITS, SPECIAL FAMILY PROGRAMS, GROUP LECTURES, AND INTERACTIVE TRUNK PROGRAMS THAT MIRROR PA STANDARDS AND CURRICULUM. PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE BROCHURES, JOURNAL AND NEWSLETTERS THAT EDUCATE MEMBERS AND PUBLIC ON HISTORICAL TOPICS OF INTEREST. CCHS ALSO HOSTS TWO MAJOR BIENNIAL CONFERENCES; CARLISLE JOURNEYS WHICH EXPLORES THE HISTORY AND IMPACT OF THE CARLISLE INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL AND CUMBERLAND PATHWAYS, A REGIONAL GENEALOGY AND FAMILY HISTORY CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA.
