MARION P. THOMAS CHARTER SCHOOL, INC. (THE "CHARTER SCHOOL") IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENTLY-OPERATED FREE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. THE CHARTER SCHOOL WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1999 BY A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE BORN AND RAISED IN NEWARK AND WANTED TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF NEWARKERS. THE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE ONLY MINORITY-LED CHARTER SCHOOLS IN NEWARK, REFLECTING BOTH ITS STUDENT POPULATION AND THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES. SINCE 1999, IT HAS GROWN FROM FOUR CLASSROOMS TO FOUR CAMPUSES AND NOW SERVES 1,468 STUDENTS FROM PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THE 12TH GRADE. IN 2020-2021 THE CHARTER SCHOOL HAD SERVED 1,468 STUDENTS THROUGH ITS PRE-KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE CURRICULUM AND SEAMLESS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FROM "CRAYONS TO COLLEGE." DURING THE YEAR, THE CHARTER SCHOOL UNDER TOOK MAJOR INITIATIVES IN ORDER FOR OUR VILLAGE TO CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE ITS HIGH LEVELS OF EXCELLENCE BY IMPLEMENTING NEW TIER I SEL CURRICULUM AND SCHOOL WIDE SUPPORTS, IMPLEMENTING TIER I ACADEMIC CURRICULUM WITH FIDELITY AND ACTIVATE BUILT IN STRUCTURESTO ASSESS AND RESPOND TO THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS, AND DEVELOPING PRINCIPALS AS INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS.
THE CHARTER SCHOOL PROVIDED NUTRITIONALLY BALANCED, LOW COST OR FREE MEALS TO CHILDREN EACH SCHOOL DAY THROUGH ITS BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAMS AND AFTER CARE PROGRAMS. THE PROGRAMS ARE FEDERALLY AND STATE ASSISTED.
THE CHARTER SCHOOL IMPLEMENTED THE EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS ACT (ESSA) AND IDEA PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAM WERE ENACTED BY CONGRESS TO REAUTHORIZE THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT WITH MAJOR FOCUS ON PROVIDING ALL CHILDREN WITH FAIR, EQUAL AND SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION THOUGH ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES.
