PROVIDING BASIC HEALTHCARE THROUGH ANNUAL HEALTH SCREENINGS IN AREAS WHERE HEALTHCARE IS NOT AVAILABLE OR SEVERELY LIMITED, FOCUSING MOSTLY ON THE AREA OF GUATEMALA CITY.

MEDICAL PROGRAM/OUTREACH:SHARED BEAT SUPPORTS EDUCATION THROUGH HEALTH AS WELL AS MEDICAL CARE ON SITE AT SAFE PASSAGE IN GUATEMALA CITY. SHARED BEAT SUPPORTS SAFE PASSAGE BY PROVIDING MONETARY & TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THE GUATEMALAN STAFF, YEARLY SUPPLIES AND MEDICATIONS AS WELL AS AN EMERGENCY FUND. THE CLINIC IS OPEN 5 DAYS A WEEK, 46 WEEKS A YEAR, TO PROVIDE BASIC MEDICAL CARE FOR THE STUDENTS AND 300+ FAMILIES OF SAFE PASSAGE LIVING IN THE GUATEMALAN DUMP COMMUNITY. ABOUT 100 PATIENTS ARE SEEN IN THE CLINIC A WEEK. CLINIC GUATEMALAN STAFF INCLUDES A PART-TIME PHYSICIAN, A FULL-TIME NURSE AND CLINIC ASSISTANT. IN BI-ANNUAL MEDICAL OUTREACH CLINICS IN 2017, 56 VOLUNTEERS FROM AT LEAST NINE STATES CARED FOR UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS IN CONCERT WITH LOCAL NONPROFITS IN GUATEMALA CITY, SAN MIGUEL MILPAS ALTA, SANTO DOMINGO, SAN BARTOLEME, EL SARGENTO & SANTA ROSA II, GUATEMALA FOR OVER 1,800 ADULTS AND CHILDREN. THE TEAMS PROVIDED PHYSICAL EXAMS & VISION SCREENS FOR 1,200 SCHOOL CHILDREN, HOLDING COMMUNITY MEDICAL AND VISION CLINICS AND DENTAL PREVENTITIVE CARE TO 3,000 STUDENTS. TEN STUDENTS RECEIVED HEARING AIDS AND FIFTY TWO STUDENTS RECEIVED GLASSES.


SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:SHARED BEAT'S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ENDED THE 2017 YEAR WITH 14 SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS. OUR FIRST STUDENT SCHOLAR IN MEDICAL SCHOOL IN GUATEMALA COMPLETED HER SECOND YEAR OF TRAINING. GENEROUS GRANTS FROM CHRISTADELPHIAN MEAL-A-DAY FUND AND THE DEVINE FOUNDATION PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.


HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM:SHARED BEAT SUPPORTS HEALTH EDUCATION AT SAFE PASSAGE THROUGH MONETARY SUPPORT FOR A FULL-TIME HEALTH EDUCATION TEACHER. THIS PROVIDES BI-MONTHLY HEALTH EDUCATION CLASSES FOR 500 STUDENTS AND 50 MOTHERS OF THE STUDENTS.
