PEACE OUTSIDE CAMPUS PROGRAMS LIVING OFF CAMPUS 101 OFFERS THE FOLLOWING RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE MOVING OFF CAMPUS. THIS INFORMATION IS READILY AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND IS DISTRIBUTED AT PRESENTATIONS AND EVENTS. 1. OFF CAMPUS HOUSING SAFETY: "WHEN LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LIVE" OFFERS SEVERAL SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER AND LOOK FOR WHEN SCOUTING OUT APARTMENTS. 2. OFF CAMPUS HOUSING SAFETY: "SAFETY IN YOUR APARTMENT" OFFERS SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS TO HELP YOU BE PROACTIVE ABOUT SAFETY WHILE LIVING IN YOUR OFF-CAMPUS APARTMENT. 3. PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS AS WELL AS A COLLEGE CAMPUS SECURITY AND SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR STUDENTS TO USE WHEN LOOKING AT PROSPECTIVE COLLEGES. B. DUE TO COVID 19 PANDEMIC, IDENTIFY THE RISK & TEENS 'N TRANSITION PROGRAMS WERE NOT OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC IN PERSON, BUT RATHER, PERTINENT INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THESE PROGRAMS REMAINED AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE. IN 2021, WE CONTINUED TO ASSESS HOW WE MAY BEST USE OUR EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE AS THE ENVIRONMENT CHANGES. C. THE LINDSEY M. BONISTALL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: THE 2020-2021 LINDSEY M. BONISTALL RESEARCH FELLOW RECIPIENT, DR. RAE ANN E. ANDERSON, WAS RAISED IN RURAL KANSAS AND NOW RESIDES IN GRAND FORKS, ND. IN GRAND FORKS SHE LEADS THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA SEXUAL VIOLENCE PREVENTION LABORATORY - WHERE SHE TRAINS STUDENTS, ENCOURAGES THEM, AND LEADS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM FOCUSED EXCLUSIVELY ON PREVENTING SEXUAL VIOLENCE. IT IS THE ONLY RESEARCH LAB OF ITS KIND IN THE GREAT PLAINS AND ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. DR. ANDERSON'S TRAINING AT AND GENEROUS MENTORS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS, THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE, THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN/ANN ARBOR VA HEALTHCARE SYSTEM AND KENT STATE UNIVERSITY UNIQUELY QUALIFY HER FOR THIS WORK. RAEANN IS THE FIRST WOMAN ON HER FATHER'S SIDE TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL, MUCH LESS COLLEGE, WHICH SENSITIZES HER TO THE NEEDS AND CHALLENGES OF THE STUDENTS WITH WHOM SHE WORKS.. THE RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS COLLEGE WOMEN TO STOP RAPE. NATIONALLY, APPROXIMATELY 1 IN 5 WOMEN WILL EXPERIENCE RAPE AND THIS NUMBER IS MUCH HIGHER FOR SPECIFIC GROUPS INCLUDING INDIGENOUS WOMEN. THIS RESULTS IN THE FACT THAT THERE ARE MORE WOMEN WITH RAPE-RELATED POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER IN THE UNITED STATES THAN THERE ARE VETERANS WITH WAR-RELATED POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER. THAT'S THE BAD NEWS. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WITH HARD WORK AND GOOD SCIENCE, WE CAN PREVENT MANY OF THESE CASES OF PTSD, AND OTHER EFFECTS OF THE TRAUMA OF RAPE. DEVELOPMENT OF GOOD COMPREHENSIVE SELF-DEFENSE SKILLS CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF RAPE; YET INDIGENOUS WOMEN HAVE RARELY BEEN INCLUDED IN STUDIES OF SELF-DEFENSE. WE KNOW THAT CULTURE AND TRADITION PROMOTE HEALTH FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE - CONNECTING TO THE TRADITIONS AND ANCESTORS OF THE PAST ARE IMPORTANT WHEN YOUR TRADITIONAL LANDS HAVE BEEN FORCIBLY TAKEN. THUS, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO EXPLORE HOW TO INCORPORATE INDIGENOUS CULTURE AND TRADITIONS INTO SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAMS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF RAPE FOR INDIGENOUS WOMEN. DR. ANDERSON'S TEAM INCLUDES MULTIPLE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WHO WILL BE MEETING WITH INDIGENOUS STUDENTS ON CAMPUS TO HEAR HOW THEY THINK WE CAN HELP PREVENT RAPE. PROGRAMS WILL BE DESIGNED BASED ON THE INPUT OF POTENTIAL VICTIMS AS WELL AS ANALYSIS OF EFFECTIVE PREVENTIVE MEASURES. D. SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN IN 2021: WITH FACEBOOK AND THE POC WEBSITE AS OUR MAIN PLATFORMS, IN 2021 WE STROVE TO INCREASE AWARENESS ON STUDENT SAFETY ISSUES RELATED TO TOPICS SUCH AS: SEXUAL ASSAULT, BULLYING, TRAVEL SAFETY, INFLUENCE OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, DATING VIOLENCE, SAFETY ON AND OFF CAMPUS, INTERNET SAFETY, EMERGENCY SERVICES, AND COVID SAFETY. IN 2021 POC BEGAN DISTRIBUTING A TRI-ANNUAL NEWSLETTER THAT HIGHLIGHTED SAFETY CONCERNS, TIPS AND POC PROGRAM UPDATES VIA EMAIL TO OUR SUPPORTERS. OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN WILL BE ONGOING IN 2022. E. PRIOR TO COVID 19 PANDEMIC, PEACE OUTSIDE CAMPUS FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS INCLUDED HOSTING AND ATTENDING VARIOUS EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO RAISE AWARENESS OF OUR MISSION AND SUPPORT PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE PERSONAL SAFETY AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS. BONISTALL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP; IDENTIFY THE RISK/TNT PROGRAMS ONLINE; SOCIAL MEDIA COMMUNITY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN. 3.
