Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
CLEAN UPS ON LAND: LAND-BASED CLEAN UPS MAY BE ON ROADSIDES, ALLEYS, VACANT LOTS, & HILL SIDES. SINCE 2010, ALLEGHENY CLEANWAYS (ACW) HAS OPERATED A PROGRAM CALLED "DUMPBUSTERS." DUMPBUSTER CREWS CLEAN UP ILLEGAL DUMP SITES NEARLY EVERY DAY, YEAR-ROUND. CREWS ARE MADE UP OF SMALL, EFFICIENT TEAMS OF ACW STAFF & TRAINED VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK SIDE BY SIDE TO TACKLE ILLEGAL DUMPS OF ALL SIZES, REMOVING AN AVERAGE OF 900-1,200 POUNDS OF DEBRIS DAILY. THE DUMPBUSTER CREWS ALSO PROVIDE EXPERTISE TO COMMUNITIES WANTING TO CLEAN UP DIFFICULT SITES & ASSIST IN LARGE COMMUNITY EVENTS BY DOING PREP WORK AND/OR RETURNING TO THE SITE TO FINISH THE JOB, IF NEEDED. ACW ALSO HOSTS LARGE CLEAN UP EVENTS PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE SPRING, SUMMER & FALL. THESE EVENTS ENGAGE A LARGE GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP PARTICULARLY LARGE OR DIFFICULT DUMP SITES. OFTEN CORPORATIONS & COMMUNITY GROUPS APPROACH US LOOKING FOR A MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CONSTITUENTS. THE WORK ACW DOES TO REMOVE DEBRIS FROM THE REGION'S HILLSIDES, OPEN LOTS, & GREENWAYS IS THE FIRST CRUCIAL STEP TO FULL RESTORATION OF THE VALUABLE GREEN SPACES THAT DEFINE THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH. WHEN POSSIBLE, ACW WORKS WITH THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE A BROADER RESTORATION GOAL IN MIND FOR THE SITE AFTER THE CLEAN UP, SUCH AS A TRAIL OF A GARDEN. WHEN THERE IS NO SPECIFIC GOAL FOR THE LAND, ACW WORKS WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS TO STEWARD & RESTORE THE SITE TO ITS NATURAL STATE.
CLEAN UPS ON WATER: ACW'S RIVERFRONT CLEAN UP PROGRAM IS AIMED AT CREATING TRASH-FREE RIVERS & STREAMS THROUGHOUT ALLEGHENY COUNTY. VOLUNTEERS WORK WITH ACW STAFF BY BOARDING OUR PONTOON BOAT, THE RACHEL CARSON, FROM WHICH THEY CAN PICK-UP THE PLASTIC BOTTLES, TIRES & OTHER ITEMS LITTERING THE SHORES. BECAUSE THE RIVERS ARE A KEY FEATURE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS OFTEN JOIN THE CLEAN UPS & DO OTHER WORK SUCH AS INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL, TREE/FLOWER PLANTING, SHORELINE LITTER PICKUP, ETC. THERE FAMILY-FRIENDLY CLEAN UPS ARE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT WITH & LEARN ABOUT THE HEALTH OF THE REGION'S WATERWAYS.
EDUCATION: ACW ALSO HAS A NUMBER OF INITIATIVES AIMED AT LITTER & DUMPSITE PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION. EDUCATION & OUTREACH: ACW HELPS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT MISSION-RELATED ISSUES IN SEVERAL WAYS, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: 1. WATERSHED EDUCATION & SERVICE-LEARNING THAT ADDRESSES THE CONSEQUENCES OF A DEGRADED WATERSHED, HOW EACH CITIZEN UNWITTINGLY CONTRIBUTES TO THE PROBLEM, & HOW EACH PERSON CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. THIS PROGRAMMING IS PROVIDED AT SCHOOLS & EVENTS HOSTED BY OTHER GROUPS. 2. THE WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL IS AN ANNUAL EVENT CO-SPONSORED WITH PA RESOURCES COUNCIL. THE AIM IS TO ENCOURAGE CITIZEN ACTION TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, AS WELL AS, RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT & FUNDS FOR BOTH ORGANIZATIONS. 3. TABLING EVENTS, SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, & MEDIA APPEARANCES PROVIDE A WAY TO EDUCATE A LARGER AUDIENCE ABOUT THE MAGNITUDE OF THE POLLUTION PROBLEM CAUSED BY LITTER & ILLEGAL DUMPING, WHO ACW IS & HOW THEY ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, & HOW INDIVIDUALS &/OR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS CAN ADDRESS THE PROBLEM.
