PRESENT OPERA PERFORMANCES IN DULUTH, MINNESOTA AND BRING OPERA TO SCHOOLS IN MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN.

THE 2022-23 FISCAL YEAR FOR LYRIC OPERA OF THE NORTH (LOON) SAW THE RETURN OF LIVE PERFORMANCES FOR THE SEASON. IN OCTOBER, LOON PRESENTED "AS ONE", AN OPERA ABOUT BECOMING A WOMAN, WITH THE STARRING ROLE SHARED BY A BARITONE AND A MEZZO-SOPRANO. TRANSGENDER ARTISTS WERE FEATURED IN THE CAST, ON THE PODIUM, AND AS HOSTS FOR THE Q&A FOLLOWING EACH PERFORMANCE. LOON PARTICIPATED AGAIN IN THE DECAMERON OPERA COALITION OF "DOC THE HALLS". LOON'S SINGERS PROVIDED THE INTRODUCTION TO EACH COMPANY'S SONG. LOON COMMISSIONED A PIECE TITLED "LITTLE SPIRIT MOON AT SOLSTICE". THE MUSIC WAS COMPOSED BY MINNESOTA COMPOSER DANIEL NASS, LYRICS BY LOCAL WRITER LINDA LEGARDE GROVER, AND SUNG BY ELIZABETH JAAKOLA, A LOCAL ANISHINAABE SINGER. THE WINTER PRODUCTION FEATURED LOON'S NEW COR ENSEMBLE IN A CONCERT OF SOLOS, ENSEMBLES, AND CHORAL MUSIC. THE LITTLE LOON PROGRAM WAS ABLE TO RETURN TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WITH A PERFORMANCE OF OPERA FOR THE YOUNG'S ADAPTATION OF "THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE." LITTLE LOON VISITED 19 SCHOOLS IN THE DULUTH-SUPERIOR AREA AND NORTHERN MINNESOTA. IN JUNE, LOON PRESENTED A FULLY STAGED PERFORMANCE OF "CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA". THERE WERE TWO FUNDRAISERS. THE VALENTINE'S DAY SOIRE, LOON'S LARGEST FUNDRAISER, RETURNED IN FEBRUARY AND THE SUMMER SPARKLER WAS HELD OUTDOORS IN AUGUST.
