THE ANIMALS ARE FIRST FUND (ARFF) PROVIDES SUPPORT SERVICES FOR ANIMALS CARED FOR AND HOUSED AT ANIMAL SHELTERS OPERATED BY SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL (ACC). ARFF PROMOTES RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP, PET ADOPTION, AND SPAYING/NEUTERING IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY. ARFF ALSO PROVIDES OTHER CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THESE GOALS, AS ALLOWED BY LAW. ARFF HAS NO PAID STAFF AND IS 100% SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTEERS WHO DESIRE TO HELP THE HOMELESS ANIMALS CARED FOR AT COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER FACILITIES.

IN CALENDAR YEAR 2021 THE ANIMALS ARE FIRST FUND (ARFF) SUPPORTED A VARIETY OF PET ADOPTION EVENTS TO HELP FIND LOVING HOMES FOR HOMELESS PETS. A TOTAL OF FOURTEEN (14) EVENTS WERE SPONSORED AND 524 PETS WERE PLACED IN HOMES AS A RESULT OF THOSE EVENTS AT A COST OF $30,545.56. ARFF PARTNERED WITH SUBARU OF AMERICA AND OUR LOCAL SUBARU DEALER TO COSPONSOR THE "SUBARU LOVES PETS" CAMPAIGN AT SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTERS AND ALSO SPONSORED THE 1ST HOMEWARD BOUND VIRTUAL PET ADOPTION EVENT. IN ADDITION, A COMMERCIAL WAS DEVELOPED TO PROMOTE PET ADOPTIONS FROM COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER FACILITIES THAT AIRED DURING THE "PUPPY BOWL AND OTHER ANIMAL RELATED EVENTS ON LOCAL CABLE TELEVISION NETWORKS. ARFF PURCHASED 5,000 MICROCHIPS AT A COST OF $27,000.00 SO ALL PETS PLACED FROM COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER FACILITIES COULD BE MICROCHIPPED FREE OF CHARGE. EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS WERE PURCHASED TO SUPPORT HUMANE EDUCATION ACTIVITIES AT A COST OF $5,012.07. ARFF LAUNCHED A NEW STERILIZATION PROGRAM IN CALENDAR YEAR 2021. THE HUMANE WILD BURRO POPULATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (HWBPMP) WAS ESTABLISHED. A GRANT WAS RECEIVED FROM THE D. J. & T. FOUNDATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $200,000.00 TO HUMANELY STERILIZE MALE WILD BURROS AND ASSIST IN RELOCATING SPECIFIC HERDS OF BURROS TO THE DONKEYLAND SANCTUARY. A TOTAL OF $51,082.50 WAS SPENT ON THE HWBPMP WITH $148,917.50 REMAINING AS A RESTRICTED AMOUNT TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM. IN THIS INITIAL PHASE OF THE PROGRAM A TOTAL OF 300 BURROS WILL BE STERILIZED. SEVERAL HERDS OF BURROS, INCLUDING MOTHERS AND THEIR YOUNG, HAVE ALREADY BEEN RELOCATED TO THE DONKEYLAND SANCTUARY WHERE THEY WILL BE SAFE.
