SPEAKFIRST: AN ALABAMA STUDENT DEBATE INITIATIVE THAT ENRICHES THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE OF TALENTED AND MOTIVATED STUDENTS FROM THE BIRMINGHAM AREA SCHOOLS THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN AN "ALL-STAR" DEBATE TEAM AND PREPARATORY PROGRAM.


FOCUSFIRST: A HIGH-TECH VISION CARE INITIATIVE PROVIDES A COST-EFFECTIVE DIRECT RESPONSE TO THE VISION PROBLEMS OF PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN WHO LIVE IN URBAN AND RURAL COMMUNITIES - PROVIDING FREE VISION SCREENINGS TO CHILDREN IN HEAD STARTS AND DAYCARES USING HIGH-TECH DIGITAL SCREENING CAMERAS. ALL CHILDREN FAILING THE SCREENINGS RECEIVE FREE OR SUBSIDIZED FOLLOW-UP CARE.


SAVEFIRST: A HIGH-QUALITY TAX PREPARATION INITIATIVE THAT TRAINS COLLEGE GRADUATE, AND LAW STUDENTS TO PROVIDE FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICES TO LOW-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES - ESPECIALLY TARGETING THOSE ELIGIBLE FOR THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT.
