AUTISTIC ADULTS HAVE BEEN LARGELY UNDER-REPRESENTED IN THE WORKFORCE, EVEN THOUGH MANY HAVE THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS ARE LOOKING FOR. AT NFAR, WE ARE WORKING TO CHANGE THIS WITH OUR VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS THAT PREPARE PARTICIPANTS FOR EMPLOYMENT IN A VARIETY OF INDUSTRY SECTORS. NFAR TECH VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM: OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED IN 2015, NFAR TECH IS A COMPREHENSIVE 8-MONTH TRAINING PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO PREPARE YOUNG ADULTS WITH AUTISM FOR CAREERS IN THE HIGH-TECH INDUSTRY AS ENTRY LEVEL SOFTWARE TESTERS. NFAR TECH WAS RECENTLY ENHANCED TO INCLUDE AN INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMATION PROCESSES AND CODING, AND HELPS TO BUILD THE TYPES OF TECHNICAL AND EMPLOYMENT SKILLS THAT EMPLOYERS ARE LOOKING FOR.
NFAR WORKS VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM: MODELED AFTER NFAR TECH, NFAR WORKS IS AN 11-MONTH COMPREHENSIVE EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE A BROADER RANGE OF INTERESTS AND ABILITIES. NFAR WORKS WAS LAUNCHED IN 2019, AND OFFERS PARTICIPANTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN EXPERIENCE ACROSS A VARIETY OF INDUSTRY SECTORS WHILE IDENTIFYING PERSONAL AREAS OF INTERESTS AND STRENGTHS.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH:. NFAR IS WORKING TO BUILD A MORE INCLUSIVE SAN DIEGO BY INCREASING COMMUNITY AWARENESS, SUPPORTING AUTISM- AT-WORK INITIATIVES, AND CONNECTING FAMILIES TO RESOURCES, PARTICULARLY WITHIN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES THEREBY IMPROVING THE LIFELONG HEALTH AND SOCIAL OUTCOMES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM. NFAR WORKS WITH LOCAL COMPANIES TO MAKE THE BUSINESS CASE FOR HIRING CANDIDATES WITH AUTISM, AND PROVIDES TRAINING, AND SUPPORT FOR COMPANIES WITH AUTISM NEW HIRES, HELPING TO IMPROVE THE LONG-TERM EMPLOYABILITY AND EARNING POTENTIAL. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: EACH YEAR, NFAR WORKS WITH EDUCATORS AT THE CLASSROOM, SCHOOL AND DISTRICT LEVELS (FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD TO TRANSITION AGE). THROUGH PROCEEDS OF THEIR ANNUAL RACE FOR AUTISM, NFAR FUNDS TECHNOLOGY AND ACADEMIC INITIATIVES THAT ADDRESS KEY AREAS OF CONCERN FOR THEIR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM, SUCH AS SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING, DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL STUDENTS, AND SENSORY AND BEHAVIORAL ISSUES THAT CAN INTERFERE WITH LEARNING.
