ACADEMIA OF LEADERSHIP. PLN CARRIED OUT THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM VIRTUALLY-- 12 LATINA MOTHERS GRADUATED FROM THE PROGRAM ASSISTED IN WORKSHOPS TO TRAIN 280 OTHER LEADERS IN TOPICS INCLUDING THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING, CITY OF BURIEN SERVICES, HIGHLINE PUBLIC SCHOOL DEPARTMENTS, MENTAL HEALTH, LATINX LGBTQ DISASTER PREVENTION. PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROGRAM STEPPED UP AS COMMUNITY LEADERS TO BE INVOLVED ON DIFFERENT COMMITTEES OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE CITY OF BURIEN AS VOLUNTEERS IN PLN SUPPORTING OUR APRENDAMOS JUNTOS COMPUTER LAB PROGRAMS AS WELL AS REPRESENTING PLN ON DIFFERENT COMMITTEES. PLN CONDUCTED A COMMUNITY SURVEY WITH RESPONSES FROM 122 FAMILIES OVER 175 STUDENTS IN 31 SCHOOLS IN THE HIGHLINE DISTRICT. WE ARE USING THE RESULTS AS A BASIS FOR A SERIES OF MEETINGS WITH HIGHLINE SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS TO INCREASE LATINO LEADERSHIP WITHIN THE DISTRICT. IN 2021 WE ALSO WORKED TO EDUCATE MOTIVATE THE LATINO POPULATION TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC WE CARRIED OUT THIS WORK THROUGH VIRTUAL TALKS CAMPAIGNS ON SOCIAL NETWORKS.
HEALTH COMMUNITY WORK. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, PLN VOLUNTEERS CARRIED OUT SUPPORT ACTIVITIES IN EVENTS RELATED TO COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTION. IN 2021 WE FORMALIZED THIS PROGRAM BY CREATING THE PILOT PROJECT FOR HEALTH PROMOTERS. WE ORGANIZED A 12-HOUR 101 TRAINING FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTERS IN THE AREAS OF CULTURE, LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION EQUITY AS WELL AS TRAINING IN SPECIFIC HEALTH AREAS INCLUDING MENTAL HEALTH, DIABETES, BLOOD PRESSURE VACCINE INFORMATION. THIS GROUP OF 6 PEOPLE PROVIDED COVID-19 INFORMATION TO OVER 3000 PEOPLE THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN HEALTH FAIRS MONTHLY VACCINATION CLINICS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE KING CO HEALTH DEPT. OVER 350 PEOPLE WERE VACCINATED THROUGH THE CLINICS. AND THEY SUPPORTED MAKING APPOINTMENTS FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY IN OTHER LOCATIONS FOR OVER 1000 ADULTS CHILDREN. THEY SUPPORTED A DENTAL PROGRAM FOR ADULTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SEATTLE DEPT OF HEALTH. THEY CONTINUE THEIR TRAINING THRU TWICE MONTHLY ONLINE TRAININGS FOR UPDATED INFORMATION ON COVID-19, VACCINES ISSUES AFFECTING THE LATINO COMMUNITY.
APRENDAMOS JUNTOS. OUR FLAGSHIP AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM IMPROVES THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF LATINO CHILDREN WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY SUPPORTING PARENTS TO BUILD ENGLISH LITERACY AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR CHILDRENS EDUCATION. PARENTS BUILD AN UNDERSTANDING OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES, EARLY LEARNING GOALS, COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS TO HELP THEM FORGE A PATH FOR THE ACADEMIC AND LIFE SUCCESS OF THEIR CHILDREN. AFTER 2 YEARS OF CARRYING OUT THIS PROGRAM VIRTUALLY, WE STARTED IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING AT THE START OF SCHOOL IN 2021. SEVENTY-SEVEN CHILDREN K-8 AND 78 PARENTS PARTICIPATED. WE HAD 5 GROUPS FOR CHILDREN DIVIDED BY GRADE AND AGE FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT, FUN, RECREATIONAL CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND 2 LEVELS OF ENGLISH CLASSES FOR THE PARENTS.
