TO PRESERVE, SHARE, AND CELEBRATE SANIBEL'S HISTORY. TO FOSTER AN UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF THE HISTORY OF SANIBEL ISLAND AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. TO ACT AS A RESOURCE FOR VARIOUS CULTURAL, EDUCATION ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS ON AND OFF THE ISLAND. TO MEET THE CONTINUING PURPOSE OF PRESERVING SANIBEL HISTORY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SHMV ENCOURAGES THE PRESERVATION, MAINTENANCE, AND COMPATIBLE RE-USE OF SANIBEL'S HISTORIC RESOURCES. THE VILLAGE CONSISTS OF NINE (9) AUTHENTIC, HISTORICALLY RESTORED BUILDINGS. AFTER A DIFFICULT COVID YEAR, ADMISSIONS AS OF NOVEMBER 30 WERE UP 20% FROM THE SAME PERIOD IN 2019, PRIOR TO COVID. SPECIAL TOURS HAVE NOT YET RESUMED BUT ARE SLATED TO BEGIN LATER THIS YEAR. REGULARLY SCHEDULED TOURS ALSO HAVE NOT YET RESUMED DUE TO THE CITY'S COVID RESTRICTIONS, BUT IT IS HOPED THEY MAY RESUME IN JANUARY. ALL TOURS SERVE AS ONE OF THE BEST VEHICLES FOR EDUCATING PEOPLE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE ISLAND AND THE PURPOSE OF THE MUSEUM.
THE MUSEUM OFFERED TWO TWILIGHT TALKS DURING IN 2021, HELD OUTDOORS ON MUSEUM GROUNDS TO ENSURE COVID SAFETY. THEY WERE "FISH (& FISHY) STORIES OF SANIBEL,- AND "TAKING A BITE OUT OF SANIBEL: THE MOSQUITO STORY." BOTH WERE ATTENDED BY ABOUT 40 PEOPLE EACH, DUE TO THE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND SPACE RESTRICTIONS. THEY WERE FILMED AND MADE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE.
SHMV HELD THREE (3) VOLUNTEER UPDATES, THE PROGRAM THAT OFFERS VOLUNTEERS ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND WHICH IS ALSO OPEN TO DONORS AT THE 150 LEVEL AND ABOVE. THEY WERE "THE ALGIERS, "THE GAVINS ON BLACK HISTORY ON SANIBEL,- AND "THE HISTORY OF SHELLING." ALL WERE HELD WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE DUE TO COVID BUT WERE FILMED AND MADE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE.
OUR ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA HAD TO BE CANCELED IN 2021 DUE TO COVID CONCERNS, LOSING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO TALK TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT OUR MISSION AND NEEDS FOR THE FUTURE.
