ESTABLISHED IN 1844, CANY IS THE ONLY INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION IN NEW YORK, AND ONE OF ONLY TWO IN THE COUNTRY, AUTHORIZED UNDER STATE LAW TO PROVIDE OVERSIGHT OF STATE PRISONS AND TO REPORT ITS FINDINGS TO THE LEGISLATURE AND PUBLIC. CANY ENVISIONS A FUTURE IN WHICH PRISONS HOLD FAR FEWER PEOPLE, FOR MUCH LESS TIME, IN TRANSFORMED CONDITIONS THAT PROMOTE HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELLBEING FOR INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, AND SOCIETY AT LARGE. CANY HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN SHAPING AND SECURING NEARLY EVERY MAJOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM IN NEW YORK FOR 175 YEARS. POLICIES ENACTED AS A RESULT OF CANYS WORK SPAN ABOLITION OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN PRISONS CREATION OF NYS FIRST PROBATION AND PAROLE SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION OF PRISON-BASED EDUCATION PROGRAMMING REPEAL OF MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCES FOR DRUG OFFENSES ENDING THE SHACKLING OF INCARCERATED PREGNANT WOMEN DURING LABOR AND THE AUTOMATIC SENTENCING OF 16- AND 17-YEAR-OLDS AS ADULTS AND EXTENDING THE RIGHTS OF INCARCERATED PARENTS TO REGAIN CUSTODY OF THEIR CHILDREN FROM FOSTER CARE. RELEASE AGING PEOPLE IN PRISON RAPP - A SPONSORED PROJECT OF THE CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK - RAPP WORKS TO END MASS INCARCERATION AND PROMOTE RACIAL JUSTICE BY GETTING ELDERLY AND INFIRM PEOPLE OUT OF PRISON. THE RAPP CAMPAIGN MOBILIZES CURRENTLY AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED PEOPLE, THEIR FAMILIES, AND OTHER CONCERNED COMMUNITY MEMBERS. FROM THIS UNITED BASE AND THROUGH THE RAPP COALITION, RAPP WORKS ALONGSIDE OTHER PRISON JUSTICE ADVOCATES TO 1 RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE DESTRUCTIVENESS OF MASS INCARCERATION AND THE BENEFITS TO SOCIETY IN RELEASING AGING PEOPLE, INCLUDING THOSE CONVICTED OF VIOLENT CRIMES WHO DO NOT THREATEN PUBLIC SAFETY AND 2 PROMOTE THE USE OF KEY MECHANISMS FOR RELEASING ELDERLY PEOPLE, SUCH AS PAROLE, COMPASSIONATE RELEASE, AND POLICY CHANGES.
