GRANTS AND ASSISTANCE TO AFFILIATE BODIES. GIVEN THE DRAMATIC IMPACT OF COVID ON OUR MEMBERS IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, OUR TOP PRIORITY WAS GRANTS AND ASSISTANCE TO LOCAL AFFILIATED BODIES IN THE US AND CANADA.
SERVICING. OUR SECOND PRIORITY WAS AN EXTENSION OF THE FIRST: TO ASSIST MEMBERS AND LOCALS IN COLLECTIVE BARGAINING WITH EMPLOYERS ACROSS THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY WITH THE GOAL OF RAISING STANDARDS FOR WAGES, BENEFITS, WORKPLACE SAFETY, AND WORKER RIGHTS. IN ADDITION, WE ASSISTED MEMBERS AND LOCALS WITH BUILDING WORKPLACE POWER AND ENFORCING THESE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTS.
ORGANIZING: TO PROVIDE MORE WORKERS WITH ACCESS TO HIGHER STANDARDS, ORGANIZING THE UNORGANIZED REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY FOR UNITE HERE. CURRENTLY MAJOR ORGANIZING CAMPAIGNS ARE UNDERWAY ACROSS NORTH AMERICA. IN FIVE YEARS PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, THE UNION ORGANIZED MORE THAN 60,000 WORKERS, AND DESPITE MASSIVE LAYOFFS AND INDUSTRY DEVASTATION, UNITE HERE ORGANIZED MORE THAN 15,000 NEW WORKERS ACROSS MORE THAN 100 WORKPLACES OVER THE COURSE OF THE PANDEMIC. THROUGH ORGANIZING, UNITE HERE MEMBERS HAVE MADE HOSPITALITY JOBS AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF OTHER TRADITIONALLY LOW-WAGE JOBS INTO GOOD, FAMILY-SUSTAINING, MIDDLE CLASS JOBS.
