OUR STAFF ATTORNEYS REPRESENT CLIENTS DIRECTLY AND TRAIN PRO BONO ATTORNEYS ON HOW TO PROVIDE LEGAL SERVICES TO THEIR CLIENTS. IN 2021, OUR PARALEGALS AND ATTORNEYS FIELDED ROUGHLY 5,000 LEGAL HELP HOTLINE CALLS, OR ABOUT 415 PER MONTH ON AVERAGE, FROM ASYLUM SEEKERS AND IMMIGRANTS SEEKING ANSWERS TO A WIDE RANGE OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE IMMIGRATION PROCESS. IN 2021, WE RECEIVED OVER 2,000 CALLS ON OUR DETENTION HOTLINE, OR ABOUT 160 CALLS PER MONTH ON AVERAGE, FROM PEOPLE IN IMMIGRATION DETENTION FACILITIES WHO NEED LEGAL SERVICES OR PEOPLE INQUIRING ABOUT HOW TO PUT SOMEONE IN DETENTION IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH US. WE ASSIST DETAINED INDIVIDUALS BY PROVIDING THEM FREE LEGAL ADVICE AND RESOURCES TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR ASYLUM CLAIMS.
OUTREACH - IMMIGRATION EQUALITY'S COMMUNICATIONS AND EDUCATION EFFORTS FOCUS ON DEMONSTRATING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE U.S. ASYLUM SYSTEM AND HIGHLIGHTING THE DISCRIMINATORY IMPACT OF IMMIGRATION LAW AND POLICY ON LGBTQ/H IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. ADVOCACY - IMMIGRATION EQUALITY WORKS TO ADVANCE POLICIES THAT PROTECT LGBTQ/H ASYLUM SEEKERS AND DETAINED INDIVIDUALS. THROUGH MEETINGS, BRIEFINGS, HEARINGS, AND OTHER COMMUNICATIONS, WE EDUCATE POLICYMAKERS AND AGENCY OFFICIALS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. ABOUT THE DANGERS THAT LGBTQ/H IMMIGRANTS FACE. OUR CLIENTS, WHO HAVE FACED THESE DANGERS THEMSELVES, SHARE THEIR PERSONAL TESTIMONIES OF DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE. WE LAY BARE THE TOLL OF HARMFUL POLICIES AND PROGRAMS AND WORK IN COALITIONS TO PUT FORWARD SOLUTIONS. BY SUBMITTING COMMENTS TO ADMINISTRATIVE AGENCIES, CRAFTING AND ENDORSING POLICIES, AND RESPONDING TO ISSUES IN THE PRESS, WE PUSH OUR LEADERS TO CREATE LASTING CHANGE IN THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM THAT BENEFITS OUR CONSTITUENTS.
