THE THEATRES 2019-2020 ARTISTIC SEASONTHE THREE PRODUCTIONS IN THE THEATRES CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED 2019-2020 ARTISTIC SEASON SERVED MORE THAN 18,000 PEOPLE. THE SEASON BEGAN WITH THE AMERICAN PREMIERE OF WHY?, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY PETER BROOK AND MARIE-HLNE ESTIENNE AND FEATURING HAYLEY CARMICHAEL, KATHRYN HUNTER AND MARCELLO MAGNI. NEXT IN THE SEASON WAS FEFU AND HER FRIENDS BY MARA IRENE FORNS, DIRECTED BY LILEANA BLAIN-CRUZ. IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2020, THE THEATRE PRESENTED SHAKESPEARES TIMON OF ATHENS, A CO-PRODUCTION WITH SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY IN WASHINGTON, D.C., DIRECTED BY SIMON GODWIN AND FEATURING KATHRYN HUNTER AS TIMON. TWO ADDITIONAL PRODUCTIONS WERE PLANNED FOR THE 2019-2020 SEASON: THE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF WILL ENOS GNIT DIRECTED BY OLIVER BUTLER, AND SAMUEL BECKETTS WAITING FOR GODOT DIRECTED BY ARIN ARBUS. ON MARCH 12, THE RUN OF GNIT WAS HALTED BY THE COVID-19 SHUTDOWN AFTER FOUR PREVIEWS BY COVID-19. ALTHOUGH POLONSKY SHAKESPEARE CENTER REMAINED CLOSED THROUGH THE END OF THE 2019-2020 SEASON, THE THEATRE CONTINUED TO ENGAGE ITS COMMUNITY OF AUDIENCES, ARTISTS, AND SUPPORTERS THROUGH NEW DIGITAL CONTENT. IN MAY 2020, THE THEATRE PRESENTED, MAD FOREST BY CARYL CHURCHILL DIRECTED BY ASHLEY TATA, A CO-PRODUCTION WITH FISHER CENTER AT BARD. MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE GLOBE VIEWED THE THREE FREE LIVESTREAMED PERFORMANCES. IN ITS HUMANITIES PROGRAMMING, THE THEATRE PRODUCED A VARIETY OF ONLINE PROGRAMS, INCLUDING ITS FIRST DIGITAL TFANA TALKS, A SUBSCRIBER BOOK CLUB ON SHAKESPEARES THE MERCHANT OF VENICE WITH DIRECTOR ARIN ARBUS, AND SHELTERING WITH SHAKESPEARE, A FREE SERIES OF 50 EPISODES ABOUT SHAKESPEARE CONCEIVED AND PERFORMED BY VETERAN SHAKESPEARE ACTOR AND TEACHER DAKIN MATTHEWS. ARTS IN EDUCATIONIN THE 2019-2020 SEASON, THE THEATRE CONTINUED ITS THREE-DECADE LONG PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION BY PROVIDING ITS TWO 13-WEEK ARTS IN EDUCATION RESIDENCIES WORLD THEATRE PROJECT (WTP) AND NEW VOICES PROJECT (NVP) TO STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY. THE PROGRAMS SERVED 1,757 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN 18 PUBLIC SCHOOLS.PROGRAM CHANGES AFTER COVID-19 SHUTDOWN: ON MARCH 15, DUE TO COVID-19, NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED, INTERRUPTING THE IN-CLASS TEACHING PROVIDED BY WTP AND NVP. IN LATE APRIL, INSTRUCTION MOVED ONLINE, AND TEACHING ARTISTS RESUMED CLASSROOM WORK DIGITALLY IN EIGHT SCHOOLS. UNFORTUNATELY, FIVE SCHOOLS WERE UNABLE TO RESUME THE PROGRAMS DUE TO BUDGET OR TECHNOLOGICAL CONCERNS AT THE SCHOOLS. IN ALL, 13 SCHOOLS COMPLETED THE PROGRAMS BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IN JUNE.ACCESS, ENGAGEMENT AND HUMANITIESACCESS: THE THEATRE PROVIDES ACCESS TO A BROAD AND DIVERSE AUDIENCE THROUGH A VARIETY OF LOW-COST TICKET OFFERS. THE THEATRES NEW DEAL TICKET INITIATIVE OFFERS $20 ADVANCE-SALE TICKETS TO PEOPLE AGED 30 AND YOUNGER AND FULL-TIME STUDENTS OF ANY AGE (WITH ID). IN 2019-2020, NEW DEAL TICKET SALES ACCOUNTED FOR 18% OF ALL TICKETS SOLD FOR THE THREE MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS THAT WENT FORWARD. ADDITIONAL DISCOUNTS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH BROOKLYN-BASED ARTS AND SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGES THAT PROVIDE A 45% DISCOUNT ON FULL-PRICE SEATS, AND DISCOUNTS THROUGH OUTLETS SUCH AS THEATRE DEVELOPMENT FUND, THEATERMANIA, GOLDSTAR, AND TKTS. POLONSKY SHAKESPEARE CENTER IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE EASY ACCESS FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, EXCEEDING REQUIREMENTS OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT: THE FACILITY OFFERS ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES, AMPLE SPECIAL NEEDS AND COMPANION SEATING ON ALL SEATING LEVELS, AUTOMATIC DOORS, AND ELEVATORS. GENDER DIVERSITY IS WELCOMED BY THEATRE FOR A NEW AUDIENCE, WHICH HAS RECENTLY ADOPTED POLICIES TO BE MORE INCLUSIVE OF PATRONS AND ARTISTS GENDER IDENTITY AND EXPRESSION AT POLONSKY SHAKESPEARE CENTER.HUMANITIES: THE THEATRE PROMOTES LEARNING AT ALL AGES BY INVITING GENERAL AUDIENCES TO ENGAGE WITH THE LANGUAGE AND IDEAS OF ITS PRODUCTIONS THROUGH ITS FREE HUMANITIES PROGRAMS, WHICH OPERATE UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF ITS COUNCIL OF SCHOLARS, SIX DISTINGUISHED ACADEMICS WITH EXPERTISE IN A VARIETY OF HUMANITIES DISCIPLINES. IN 2019-2020, HUMANITIES PROGRAMS ENGAGED APPROXIMATELY 850 PEOPLE THROUGH NINE FREE EVENTS, INCLUDING A SCREENING OF THE REST I MAKE UP, A DOCUMENTARY ON MARA IRENE FORNS.FOR THE THREE MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS THAT WERE PERFORMED DURING THE SEASON, THE THEATRE PRODUCED A 360 VIEWFINDER, A PUBLICATION FEATURING ARTICLES ON THE PLAYS HISTORY, CONTEXT, AND THEMES AS WELL AS INTERVIEWS WITH THE CREATIVE TEAM.
