OUR MISSION IS TO SERVE AS A CATALYST FOR POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY ON THEIR PATHS TO SECURE VIOLENCE-FREE AND PROSPEROUS FUTURES.

NMIC'S LEGAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT PROVIDES FREE CIVIL LEGAL REPRESENTATION AND ADVOCACY. NMIC'S PRACTICE AREAS INCLUDE LANDLORD/TENANT, PUBLIC BENEFITS, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DISABILITY, ENVIRONMENTAL LAW (FOCUSING ON CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING PREVENTION, MOLD, AND ASTHMA TRIGGERS), IMMIGRATION, AND CONSUMER LAW. NMIC ALSO RUNS A COURT-BASED OFFICE IN THE MANHATTAN HOUSING COURT THAT PROVIDES IMMEDIATE REPRESENTATION TO TENANTS IN EMERGENCY EVICTION PROCEEDINGS ON A BOROUGH-WIDE BASIS.


NMIC EDUCATION & CAREER SERVICES PROGRAMS ASSIST LOW-INCOME, UNEMPLOYED AND UNDEREMPLOYED RESIDENTS PREPARE FOR, SECURE, AND RETAIN SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT. JOB SEEKERS RECEIVE CASE MANAGEMENT, JOB READINESS TRAINING, VOCATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING, JOB REPLACEMENT, AND POSTPLACEMENT RETENTION AND ADVANCEMENT SERVICES. PROGRAMS ARE TAILORED TO THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF YOUNG ADULTS AND ADULTS WITH LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND LOW LITERACY SKILLS AND ARE COMPLEMENTED BY STRONG EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS SUCH AS ESOL, ABE, AND HSE PREPARATION PROGRAMS.


NMIC'S WEATHERIZATION DEPARTMENT COLLABORATES WITH PROPERTY OWNERS TO PROVIDE LONG-TERM, ENERGY-EFFICIENT IMPROVEMENTS SUCH AS UPGRADING OR REPLACEMENT OF HEATING SYSTEMS, REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF WINDOWS, ROOF AND PIPE INSULATION, ETC. BUILDING PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE CERTIFIED STAFF USE STATE OF THE ART EQUIPMENT AND PERFORM ENERGY AUDITS TO DETERMINE THE MOST COST-EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION MEASURES. NO RENT INCREASES ARE PASSED ALONG TO TENANTS AS A RESULT OF THE IMPROVEMENTS.
