PERFORMANCES & CONVERSATIONS FEATURING AMERICAN COMPOSERSIN RESPONSE TO THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON COMPOSERS AND PERFORMERS, AMERICAN COMPOSERS ORCHESTRA CREATED CONNECTING ACO COMMUNITY, A NEW INITIATIVE TO COMMISSION SHORT WORKS FOR SOLO INSTRUMENT OR VOICE. WITH THESE 10 PREMIERES FROM JULY-OCTOBER, ACO SUPPORTED ARTISTS WHO NEED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE; CREATED NEW WORK THAT WILL LIVE BEYOND THIS CRISIS; AND PROVIDED VIRTUAL, INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCES TO ACO'S SUPPORTERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDED COMPOSER TO COMPOSER TALKS, A SERIES THAT FEATURES MAJOR AMERICAN COMPOSERS IN CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER ABOUT THEIR WORK AND LEADING A CREATIVE LIFE; AND A LISTENING PARTY OF TEN WORKS RECORDED BY ACO IN PREVIOUS SEASONS AT CARNEGIE HALL. VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING ALLOWED ACO TO SERVE AN INCREASED POPULATION OF EMERGING COMPOSERS, FROM AN AVERAGE OF 20 PER SEASON (4-6 COMPOSERS PER REGIONAL EARSHOT READING) TO 769 COMPOSERS IN SEASON 2020-2021. PROGRAMS INCLUDED CONNECTING ACO COMMUNITY, COMPOSER TO COMPOSER TALKS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEBINARS, AND COMPOSER SPOTLIGHTS.
MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THE 2020-21 SEASON, ACO DIRECTLY SERVED 320 STUDENTS THROUGH IN-SCHOOL, AFTER-SCHOOL, AND DISTANCE-LEARNING PROGRAMS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. PROGRAMS INCLUDED SONIC SPARK ENSEMBLES, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL DIRECT INSTRUMENTAL AND VOICE INSTRUCTION, COMPOSE YOURSELF, HIGH SCHOOL COMPOSITION CLASSES FOR MUSICIANS WHO WANT TO COMPOSE THEIR OWN MUSIC, AND SONIC SPARK LAB, MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSES THAT USE COMPOSITION AS A PLATFORM TO UNLOCK STUDENTS' CREATIVITY.
