PLACEMAKING PROGRAM:THE PLACEMAKING PROGRAM SEEKS TO GIVE EVERYONE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHAPE AND IMPROVE THE PUBLIC SPACES THEY USE EVERYDAY THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS, TRAINING, CONVENING, AND RESEARCH.IN 2021, PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES BUILT UPON ITS DECADES OF EXPERIENCE WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FOUNDATIONS AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAMS BY LAUNCHING THE COMMUNITY PLACEMAKING GRANTS INITIATIVE. WITH FOUNDING SUPPORT FROM GENERAL MOTORS, THIS NEW INITIATIVE AIMS TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AS WELL AS CAPACITY BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES, TO PLACEMAKING NONPROFITS IMPROVING ACCESS TO HIGH-PERFORMING PUBLIC SPACES AROUND THE UNITED STATES. IN ITS INAUGURAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS, THE INITIATIVE SELECTED THREE PROJECTS IN BUFFALO, NY: THE CENTRAL TERMINAL RESTORATION CORPORATION, THE BUFFALO URBAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, AND THE BUFFALO HERITAGE CAROUSEL. THROUGH THE CLARITY PARKS PROJECT, CREATED BY BAYER (THE MAKERS OF CLARITIN), PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES COMPLETED THREE PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS IN COMMUNITIES IMPACTED BY NATURAL DISASTERS: REPUBLIC SQUARE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS; LAFITTE GREENWAY IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA; AND H.A. CHAPMAN CENTENNIAL GREEN IN TULSA, OKLAHOMA. THROUGH THIS PARTNERSHIP, WE ALSO BEGAN WORK ON THREE ADDITIONAL PROJECTS TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO GET OUTDOORS WITH WIN, A CITYWIDE NONPROFIT PROVIDING SHELTER TO HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN NEW YORK CITY, NY; THE HAWTHORNE COMMUNITY CENTER IN INDIANAPOLIS, IN; AND THE MARKET SQUARE UNDERPASS IN SAN ANTONIO, TX.IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GAF, PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES CONTINUED WORK ON AN ADDITION AND NEW PLAZA AT THE SHAFTER LEARNING CENTER, IN SHAFTER, CALIFORNIA, AND WITH SUPPORT FROM CLOROXPRO, A MOBILE "ALL ACCESS LIBRARY" FOR THE FULTON COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM TO PROVIDE OUTDOOR PROGRAMMING THE ONGOING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC.ON JUNE 15-18, 2021, PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES HELD WALK/BIKE/PLACES 2021 IN INDIANAPOLIS, IN, ITS FIRST EVER HYBRID VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON CONFERENCE, WHICH FOCUSED ON THE THEME "THE ROUTE TO RECOVERY." THIS FOUR DAY EVENT CONSISTED OF OVER 50 CONCURRENT SESSIONS AND ACTIVITIES WITH OVER 581 WALKING, BIKING, AND PLACEMAKING PROFESSIONALS IN ATTENDANCE. ATTENDEES REPRESENTED A RICH MIX OF THE PUBLIC, NONPROFIT, AND PRIVATE SECTORS AND HAILED FROM 47 U.S. STATES AND 5 CANADIAN PROVINCES, AND SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITY GENERATED OVER 10 MILLION POTENTIAL IMPRESSIONS THROUGHOUT THE CONFERENCE.PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES CONTINUED ITS ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BASS CENTER FOR TRANSFORMATIVE PLACEMAKING AT THE BROOKINGS INSTITUTION, WHICH WILL CULMINATE IN THE PUBLICATION OF A NEW BOOK, HYPERLOCAL: PLACE GOVERNANCE IN A FRAGMENTED WORLD, TO BE PUBLISHED BY THE BROOKINGS PRESS IN OCTOBER 2022. THE BOOK COLLECTS ESSAYS ON THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF DISTRICT AND PUBLIC SPACE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATIONS IN AMERICAN CITIES.FINALLY, PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES OFFERED PLACEMAKING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO FIVE PUBLIC SPACE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATIONS AROUND NORTH AMERICA: DL&W TERMINAL IN BUFFALO, NY; LEGACY PARK IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS; SANTA CRUZ PUBLIC LIBRARIES, IN SANTA CRUZ, CA; A NEW CIVIC HUB IN NEWPORT NEWS, VA; AND THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY.
MARKET CITIES:THE MARKET CITIES PROGRAM SEEKS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC POLICY AND ON-THE-GROUND PRACTICE REGARDING PUBLIC MARKET SYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD. IT IS AN EVOLUTION OF THE ORGANIZATION'S FORMER PUBLIC MARKETS PROGRAM, WHICH BEGAN IN 1987. IN 2021, THE MARKET CITIES TEAM UNDERWENT EXTENSIVE PROGRAM AND BUSINESS PLANNING FOR THE NEWLY FORMALIZED PROGRAM. THIS PLANNING INCLUDED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MENU OF ACTIVITIES TO OFFER IN THE COMING YEARS, INCLUDING ON-THE-GROUND PROJECTS, TRAININGS, CONFERENCES, NETWORKING ACTIVITIES, AND COMMUNICATIONS.
