NORTH SALUDA - SALUDA LAKE WATERSHED IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT (AKA NORTH SALUDA 319 PROJECT) - THE GOAL OF THE NORTH SALUDA-SALUDA LAKE WATERSHED IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT IS TO REDUCE SEDIMENT RUNOFF AND TO PROTECT AND IMPROVE THE WATER QUALITY OF THE NORTH SALUDA RIVER AND SALUDA LAKE WHICH PROVIDES DRINKING WATER TO 80,000+ CUSTOMERS IN THE GREATER EASLEY AREA, THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION OF SOIL CONSERVATION PROJECTS. THROUGH GRANT FUNDING FROM THE SC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT OF PARTNERING ORGANIZATIONS, THIS PROJECT ENABLED SAVE OUR SALUDA TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A 90% COST SHARE TO LANDOWNERS AND AGRICULTURAL OPERATORS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AGRICULTURAL BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMP) FOR SOIL CONSERVATION. PROJECT EXAMPLES INCLUDE COVER CROPS, FARM ACCESS ROAD STABILIZATION, RIPARIAN BUFFER ESTABLISHMENT AND ENHANCEMENT, AND SEDIMENT CONTROL BASINS, AMOUNT OTHERS, COST SHARE WAS PROVIDED TO INTERESTED ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WATERSHED PLAN DEVELOPED PREVIOUSLY FOR THIS PURPOSE.
WATERSHED MANAGER SERVICES FOR THE UPPER SALUDA WATERSHED - SAVE OUR SALUDA RECEIVES ADDITIONAL GRANT FUNDING FROM EASLEY COMBINED UTILITIES FOR UPPER SALUDA WATERSHED MANAGER CONSULTING SERVICES. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: REGULARLY PATROLLING THE WATERSHED TO IDENTIFY LAND USE ACTIVITIES CAUSING EXCESS SEDIMENT RUNOFF AND OTHER POLLUTION THAT THREATEN DOWNSTREAM WATER QUALITY; RESPONDING TO REPORTS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY REGARDING SEDIMENT AND OTHER POLLUTION THREATS TO WATERS; REPORTING, COORDINATING, AND FOLLOWING UP WITH LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL REGULATORY AUTHORITIES ON PROBLEM SITES IN ORDER TO FACILITATE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS; SEEKING ADDITIONAL GRANT MONIES FOR RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS; AND LEADING COMMUNITY EDUCATION OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES TO FURTHER THE OVERALL GOALS OF WATERSHED PLANNING EFFORTS IN THE UPPER SALUDA WATERSHED.
CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN SERVICES - SAVE OUR SALUDA DEVELOPS CONSERVATION PLANS, DESIGNS, SPECIFICATIONS, AND CONTRACTS FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR SOIL CONSERVATION BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMP) PROJECTS FOR WATERSHED IMPLEMENTATION THROUGH SCDHEC 319 GRANTS; PROVIDES CONSTRUCTION OVERSIGHT FOR BMP PROJECT INSTALLATION; AND CONDUCTS FOLLOW-UP INSPECTIONS AND IDENTIFIES MAINTENANCE NEEDS FOR PROJECTS.
