THE RESEARCH CAPACITY STRENGTHENING (RCS) PROGRAM IS WORKING TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF RESEARCH LEADERS IN THE REGION AND IMPROVE INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY FOR RESEARCH ACROSS ACADEMIA THROUGH ITS FLAGSHIP DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMS: THE CONSORTIUM FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH TRAINING IN AFRICA (CARTA), & THE AFRICAN DOCTORAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (ADDRF). ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE:IN 2021, CARTA HAD A TOTAL OF 228 FELLOWS IN ITS PROGRAM. OUT OF THESE, 30 GRADUATED IN THE YEAR, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PHD CARTA GRADUATES TO 127. TWO FELLOWS EXITED THE PROGRAM. NO POST-GRADUATE AWARDS WERE GRANTED IN 2021, KEEPING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF POST-DOCTORAL AWARDS GRANTED AT 58. THE FELLOWS ALSO PUBLISHED 546 PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLES IN 2021, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PUBLICATIONS BY THE CARTA FELLOWS AND GRADUATES TO 2035.APHRC CONDUCTED SHORT-COURSE TRAINING WORKSHOPS FOR A BROADER AUDIENCE OF ACADEMIC, ADVOCACY & OTHER RESEARCH-INTERESTED INSTITUTIONS.
MATERNAL CHILD AND WELLBEING UNIT:1. ZERO HUNGER INITIATIVE IS WORKING WITH THE KENYAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH, THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE & THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF NAIROBI ON THE INITIATIVE OF ENDING HUNGER AND ALL FORMS OF MALNUTRITION IN KENYAN CITIES BY 2030. WE HAVE FORMED A MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ADVISORY GROUP THAT INCLUDES DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT SECTORS, UN AGENCIES, ACADEMIA, THE CIVIL SOCIETY, THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND THE COMMUNITY TO HELP STEER THE INITIATIVE WHICH WAS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED OCTOBER 15, THE WORLD FOOD DAY.2. THE HUMAN MILK BANKING PROJECT IS WORKING WITH THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT MINISTRY OF HEALTH REGARDING MOVING HUMAN MILK BANKING FORWARD TOWARDS BEING ADOPTED AND SCALED TO PROMOTE NEONATAL HEALTH AND SURVIVAL IN KENYA.3. THE NECS AND COP PROJECT TEAMS ARE WORKING WITH THE NAIROBI METROPOLITAN SERVICES DEPARTMENTS OF HEALTH & EDUCATION TO DISCUSS HOW CHILDCARE PROVISION WITHIN THE COUNTRY COULD BE IMPROVED. THESE DISCUSSIONS FED INTO AN ADVOCACY STRATEGY DOCUMENT THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING FINALIZED.
POPULATION DYNAMICS AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS UNIT:THE POPULATION DYNAMICS AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS UNIT FOCUSES ON IDENTIFYING THE BARRIERS TO AND SOLUTIONS FOR IMPROVING ACCESS TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH INFORMATION AND SERVICES FOR ALL. THE UNIT ALSO ACTIVELY ENGAGES WITH POLICY-MAKERS AND PROGRAM IMPLEMENTERS TO FACILITATE THE TRANSLATION OF ITS EVIDENCE TO POLICY AND PROGRAMMATIC ACTION.CHALLENGING THE POLITICS OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION (CPSE) PROJECT CONTRIBUTED TO AND SUPPORTED THE DRAFTING OF THE EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS (EAC SRHR) BILL.
