KIDS' FOOD BASKET SACK SUPPER AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS NOURISH KIDS TO REACH THIER FULL POTENTIAL. SACK SUPPERS ARE NUTRITIOUS EVENING MEALS DELIVERED WEEKDAYS TO NEARLY 8,800 CHILDREN ACROSS WEST MICHIGAN PRE COVID. EACH MEAL IS PREPARED, PACKED AND DELIVERED WITH THE SUPPORT OF DAILY VOLUNTEERS. VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED MORE THAN 24,600 HOURS OF TIME AND COMMUNITY DONATIONS OF IN-KIND FOOD HELPED US SERVE A TOTAL OF 1,323,883 MEALS IN 4 WEST MICHIGAN COUNTIES. WHEN INCLUDING THE 664,900 OF VOLUNTEER HOURS, ADJUSTED PROGRAM EFFICIENCY IS 76%. SINCE COVID KFB HAS RESPONDED WITH AN EMERGENCY FOOD PROVISION STRATEGY DISTRIBUTING TO ORGANIZATIONS SERVING LOW INCOME FAMILIES.
KIDS HELPING KIDS PROGRAMMING IS THE YOUTH OUTREACH AND EDUCATION ARM OF KIDS' FOOD BASKET, PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO ENGAGE IN OUR MISSION AND LEARN ABOUT CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGH UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE LESSON PLANS. APPROXIMATELY A THIRD OF OUR ANNUAL VOLUNTEERS ARE YOUTH UNDER THE AGE OF 18 AND INCLUDE STUDENTS IN AND OUT OF OUR SERVICE LOCATIONS. PROGRAM GOALS INCLUDE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNITY CONNECTION AND BUILDING THE HABIT OF GIVING, ALL OF WHICH HAVE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE FUTURE LEADERS OF WEST MICHIGAN. YOUTH UNDER THE AGE OF 18 COMPLETED 128 HOURS OF SERVICE THROUGH OUR KIDS HELPING KIDS PROGRAM.
OUR URBAN GROWING AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM IS A RESPONSE TO THE IMMENSE NUMBER OF WEST MICHIGAN RESIDENTS WHO ARE AFFECTED BY FOOD INSECURITY. AN INCREASING NUMBER OF FOOD DESERTS PAIRED WITH EASIER ACCESS TO FAST FOOD AND CONVENIENCE STORES FURTHER LIMITS EQUITABLE ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES. KIDS' FOOD BASKET HEADQUARTERS ARE ADJACENT TO THE LARGEST WORKING FARMLAND IN GRAND RAPIDS CITY LIMITS. THE FARM PROVIDES HANDS-ON AGRICULTURAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES, IMPROVES ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES AND PROMOTES SUSTAINABLE GROWING PRACTICES. FARM YIELD SUPPLEMENTS SACK SUPPERS, PROVIDES FRESH PRODUCE FOR COMMUNITY PARTNERS, AND PROVIDES ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AS WE TEACH MORE PEOPLE THE VALUE OF EQUITABLE ACCESS TO NOURISHING FOOD.
