WE OPERATE ONE OF THE LEADING SAILING INSTRUCTION PROGRAMS ON CAPE COD; THE JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM AT THE WIANNO YACHT CLUB. THIS PROGRAM IS OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND WE PROVIDE TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS WITH A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP.HERE IS A SUMMARY OF THIS SAILING PROGRAMS ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE 2021 SEASONWE HAD 100 SAILORS IN SESSION 1 (JULY) AND 103 SAILORS IN SESSION 2 (AUGUST).WE TAUGHT 168 GROUP LESSONS IN OUR LEARN TO SAIL PROGRAM OVER THE COURSE OF 8 WEEKS, SERVICING THE 185 SAILORS IN OUR "LEARN TO SAIL" PROGRAM.WE HELD 96 RACE TEAM PRACTICES SERVICING THE 18 PARTICIPANTS IN OUR OPTI AND 420 RACE TEAMS. OF THESE PARTICIPANTS IN 2021, AN ESTIMATED 73% OF THEM WERE NOT MEMBERS OF THE WIANNO YACHT CLUB. WE HAD 10 PARTICIPANTS IN TWO ADULT SAILING CLASSES THIS SUMMER (6 ON WEDNESDAYS AND 4 ON THURSDAYS). THERE WAS A TOTAL OF 8 CLASSES EACH GIVING US A TOTAL OF 16 ADULT SAILING CLASSES TAUGHT TO A GROUP OF 10. 40% OF THIS GROUP WERE MEMBERS OF THE WIANNO YACHT CLUB, 60% WERE NON-MEMBERS. WE TAUGHT 97 "PRIVATE LESSONS" (OFFERED OUTSIDE THE SCHEDULED GROUP SAILING INSTRUCTION PROGRAM) OVER THE COURSE OF OUR SUMMER TO AN ESTIMATED 205 SAILORS. THIS ESTIMATE IS BASED OFF BOOKING RECORDS BUT REMAINS AN ESTIMATE AS THERE ARE A HANDFUL OF "WORD OF MOUTH" PRIVATE LESSONS EACH SUMMER THAT ARE BOOKED OUTSIDE OUR ONLINE REGISTRATION PORTAL. WE RUN A WILDLY POPULAR "OPTI REGATTA" (AGE 15 AND UNDER RACING EVENT HELD IN OPTIMIST SAILING PRAMS) WHICH TOOK PLACE OVER TWO DAYS IN JULY AND SERVED 140 JUNIOR SAILORS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. ONLY 6 PARTICIPANTS IN THIS EVENT WERE MEMBERS OF THE WIANNO YACHT CLUB. THE OTHER 134 SAILORS WERE NON-MEMBERS. THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION HAS PAID FOR THE STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE OF TWO WIANNO SENIOR SAILBOATS THAT HAVE BEEN DONATED BY THEIR OWNERS FOR UNRESTRICTED USE BY THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR "SAIL A SENIOR" PROGRAM. THIS ALLOWS ANY QUALIFIED SAILING INSTRUCTION PROGRAM TO USE THESE BOATS (WHICH WERE FIRST DESIGNED AND BUILT IN OUR COMMUNITY MORE THAN 100 YEARS AGO) AT NO CHARGE. IN 2021 WE SPENT A TOTAL OF $10,956 ON MAINTENANCE, MOVING AND STORAGE. IN 2021 THESE BOATS WERE ACTIVELY USED IN THE JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM AND ADULT SAILING PROGRAM AT WIANNO YACHT CLUB AND WERE USED BY NON-MEMBER GROUPS INCLUDE WEQUAKET LAKE YACHT CLUB SAILING STUDENTS.
THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION MADE A GRANT OF $6,000 TO THE WEQUAQUET LAKE YACHT CLUB TO PURCHASE SIX SETS OF NEW SAILS FOR THE FLEET OF 420 SAILBOATS THAT ARE USED IN THEIR SAILING EDUCATION PROGRAM. THESE BOATS ARE ALSO USED DURING SAILING COMPETITION HOSTED AT WEQUAQUET LAKE YACHT CLUB WITH SAILORS FROM OTHER SAILING GROUPS ON CAPE COD.THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION MADE A $7,500 GRANT TO WILD HARBOR SAILING (WILD HARBOR YACHT CLUB) TO HELP REBUILD THEIR BOAT LAUNCHING RAMP WHICH WAS DESTROYED BY THE REMNANTS OF HURRICANE IDA IN AUGUST 2021. THIS IS A PUBLIC ACCESS RAMP USED BY WILD HARBOR SAILING AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY AND IS THE PRIMARY ACCESS POINT TO WILD HARBOR AND CONNECTS TO BUZZARDS BAY. THIS BOAT RAMPS IS VERY ACTIVELY USED BY HUNDREDS OF BOAT OWNERS AND SAILORS IN THIS FALMOUTH, MASS. COMMUNITY. THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION MADE $1,000 DONATION TO THREE (3) OTHER OUTSTANDING NON-PROFIT SAILING INSTRUCTION PROGRAMS: NANTUCKET COMMUNITY SAILING, SAIL MARTHA'S VINEYARD AND PLEASANT BAY COMMUNITY BOATING. THESE THREE PROGRAMS OFFER SAILING INSTRUCTION TO ALL AGES AND ABILITIES, INCLUDING ADAPTIVE SAILING PROGRAMS. UNLIKE THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION, THESE ORGANIZATIONS OWN AND OPERATE A FLEET OF SAILBOATS THAT ARE USED IN THEIR PROGRAMS AND THAT ARE MADE AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE RENTAL. PLEASANT BAY COMMUNITY BOATING PROVIDED US WITH THESE STATISTICS ABOUT THEIR 2021 OPERATIONS: 1,969 INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED IN THEIR 24 DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS, THEY CONDUCTED A TOTAL OF 575 DIFFERENT CLASSES AND ARRANGED A TOTAL OF 508 BOAT RENTALS TO GET FOLKS OUT ON THE WATER. NANTUCKET COMMUNITY SAILING OPERATES FROM TWO LOCATIONS AND HAS SIMILARLY IMPRESSIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH THEIR COMMUNITY. THE WIANNO SAILING FOUNDATION APPROVED A GRANT REQUEST THAT PROVIDED $500 OF COLLEGE TUITION FINANCIAL AID TO A LEADER ON THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SAILING TEAM WHO HAS SPEARHEADED A "LEARN TO SAIL" PROGRAM THERE TO PROVIDE ADAPTIVE SAILING ACCESS TO DISABLED INDIVIDUALS.
