THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS PROVIDES SUPPORT SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY APHASIA. APHASIA IS A LOSS OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE USUALLY DUE TO A STROKE OR OTHER TYPE OF BRAIN INJURY. PEOPLE WITH APHASIA HAVE DIFFICULTY READING, WRITING AND SPEAKING BUT THEIR INTELLECT IS INTACT. THE APHASIA CENTER UTILIZES A SOCIAL MODEL OF SERVICE OVERSEEN AND OPERATING BY QUALIFIED SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS AND OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. WE SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIFE PARTICIPATION APPROACH TO APHASIA. THIS APPROACH IS RECOGNIZED AS BEST PRACTICE FOR SERVING PEOPLE WITH APHASIA. IT IS A HOLISTIC, GROUP METHOD OF SERVICE THAT ADDRESSES THE WHOLE PERSON AND PROVIDES THE CONVERSATION TOOLS NECESSARY TO OVERCOME COMMUNICATION BARRIERS. DURING THE YEAR, THE APHASIA CENTER DIRECTLY SERVED 184 INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY APHASIA AND OFFERED 1,953 PROGRAM HOURS IN BOTH SKILLED LIFE PARTICIPATION AND SOCIAL GROUPS. ADDITIONALLY, THE CENTER PROVIDED 567 HOURS OF TRANSPORTATION TO ENSURE PEOPLE WITH APHASIA HAD ACCESS TO OUR SERVICES. THESE NUMBERS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER LAST YEAR WHEN WE WERE STILL COPING WITH THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC AND PEOPLE WERE FEARFUL ABOUT GETTING OUT. AS A RESULT OF PEOPLE FEELING SAFER, OUR SERVICES WERE NEEDED AND ACCESSED IN 2022 MORE THAN EVER. A LARGE PART OF THE SERVICES WE OFFER THE COMMUNITY INVOLVES NO COST ACCESS TO THE EXPERTISE OF OUR LICENSED SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS. THE CENTER PROVIDED 96 HOURS OF SKILLED, CLINICAL CONSULTATION SERVICES AT NO CHARGE. AT APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS, WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL IMPACTED BY APHASIA BY OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS BOTH AT HOME AND IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
