Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS PROVIDES SUPPORT SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY APHASIA. APHASIA IS A LOSS OF SPEECH AND LANGUAGE USUALLY DUE TO A STROKE OR OTHER TYPE OF BRAIN INJURY. PEOPLE WITH APHASIA HAVE DIFFICULTY READING, WRITING AND SPEAKING BUT THEIR INTELLECT IS INTACT. THE APHASIA CENTER UTILIZES A SOCIAL MODEL OF SERVICE OVERSEEN AND OPERATING BY QUALIFIED SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS AND OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. WE SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIFE PARTICIPATION APPROACH TO APHASIA. THIS APPROACH IS RECOGNIZED AS BEST PRACTICE FOR SERVING PEOPLE WITH APHASIA. IT IS A HOLISTIC, GROUP METHOD OF SERVICE THAT ADDRESSES THE WHOLE PERSON AND PROVIDES THE CONVERSATION TOOLS NECESSARY TO OVERCOME COMMUNICATION BARRIERS. AT THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS WE ALSO OFFER HELP FOR THE LOVED ONES OF THOSE WITH APHASIA BY TEACHING SUPPORTIVE CONVERSATION TECHNIQUES.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

DURING THE YEAR, THE APHASIA CENTER DIRECTLY SERVED 160 INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY APHASIA AND OFFERED 2,589 PROGRAM HOURS IN BOTH SKILLED LIFE PARTICIPATION AND SOCIAL GROUPS. ADDITIONALLY, THE CENTER PROVIDED 851 HOURS OF TRANSPORTATION TO ENSURE PEOPLE WITH APHASIA HAD ACCESS TO OUR SERVICES. A LARGE PART OF THE SERVICES THE CENTER OFFERS THE COMMUNITY INVOLVE NO COST ACCESS TO THE EXPERTISE OF LICENSED SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS. THE CENTER PROVIDED 74 HOURS OF SKILLED, CLINICAL CONSULTATION SERVICES AT NO CHARGE. WITHOUT THE SERVICES OFFERED, THE PERMIAN BASIN AND SURROUNDING AREAS WOULD HAVE NO LONG-TERM SERVICES FOR PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE LOSS. PEOPLE WITH APHASIA OFTEN FEEL ISOLATED AND ARE FREQUENTLY MARGINALIZED WITHIN THEIR OWN FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY AT LARGE. THE APHASIA CENTER OF WEST TEXAS REMAINS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL IMPACTED BY APHASIA BY OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS BOTH AT HOME AND IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
