Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

LEGAL PROGRAM - THE ACLU-ME'S LEGAL PROGRAM IS CENTRAL TO OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES WORK. THIS YEAR, WE FILED A MAJOR CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO VINDICATE THE RIGHT TO THE EFFECTIVE ASSISTANCE OF COUNSEL FOR ALL MAINE RESIDENTS (ROBBINS V. MCILS). WE FILED AMICUS BRIEFS SUPPORTING FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AND SUPPORTING THE RIGHT OF DRIVERS TO BE FREE FROM RACIAL PROFILING BY POLICE. WE ALSO FILED AMICUS BRIEFS IN TWO SUPREME COURT CASES, ONE SUPPORTING THE STATE'S REASONABLE COVID-19 VACCINE MANDATE AND ANOTHER AGAINST USING STATE PUBLIC FUNDS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (CARSON V. MAKIN). ADDITIONALLY, THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REACHED A SIGNIFICANT CONSENT DECREE WITH LEWISTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS OVER THE DISTRICT'S PRACTICE OF REMOVING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES FROM CLASSROOMS, VIOLATING THEIR RIGHT TO AN EDUCATION FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION. THE DOJ INVESTIGATION WAS PROMPTED BY THE ACLU AND OUR YOUTH AND DISABILITY RIGHTS PARTNERS.

PUBLIC EDUCATION - THE ACLU-ME'S PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM RAISES AWARENESS OF HOW THE CONSTITUTION'S PROTECTIONS IMPACT MAINER'S DAILY LIVES. WE SUPPORTED THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT'S WORK BY PUBLICIZING IMPORTANT LAWSUITS AND AMICUS BRIEFS IN THE PRESS AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA, INCLUDING FOR ROBBINS V. MCILS AND THE AMICUS BRIEF AGAINST RACIAL PROFILING BY POLICE. ADDITIONALLY, WE PUBLISHED A SIGNIFICANT REPORT WITH OUR COLLABORATORS AT MAINE CENTER FOR ECONOMIC POLICY (MECEP) MAKING THE CASE FOR DRUG DECRIMINALIZATION - EDUCATING LAWMAKERS, THE PRESS AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT WHY DECRIMINALIZATION IS BOTH COST-EFFECTIVE AND REASONABLE. WE ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND REPORT ABOUT WIDESPREAD RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AT THE BOSTON ASYLUM OFFICE (WHICH SERVES ASYLUM APPLICANTS IN MAINE) WITH PARTNERS AT MAINE LAW AND IMMIGRANT LEGAL ADVOCACY PROJECT (ILAP). A FOIA LAWSUIT THE ACLU LED PRODUCED DATA THAT WAS USED IN THE REPORT. WE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PUBLIC'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE FAILINGS OF THE U.S. ASYLUM SYSTEM.
