UPTOWN GAY & LESBIAN ALLIANCE IS A CHARITABLE, EDUCATIONAL AND PUBLIC SERVICE ORGANIZATION IN NE LOS ANGELES. FOUNDED IN 1983 AFTER THE MURDER OF A LOCAL GAY MAN, UGLA PROVIDES VISIBILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY THROUGH COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS AND EVENTS.

THE UPTOWN GAY AND LESBIAN ALLIANCES CHARITABLE PROGRAM NOW HAS FIVE COMPONENTS: (1) MIXER HONORARIUMS TO PROGRAM PROVIDERS; (2) COMMUNITY GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS SELECTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS; (3) A MATCHING FUND PROGRAM WHERE CLUB MEMBERS SELECT SCHOOLS OR 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN LOS ANGELES COUNTY TO GET DONATIONS; (4) A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM DESIGNED TO REWARD STUDENTS PROMOTING SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES; AND (5) AN EXCEPTIONAL ONE-TIME COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE ALLIANCE AND THE HISTORIC HIGHLAND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL WHERE FOOD SUPPORT WAS PROVIDED TO NINETY FAMILIES OF SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN.
THE UPTOWN GAY AND LESBIAN ALLIANCES EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT ALSO INVOLVES COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO ENHANCE OUR VISIBILITY IN THE COMMUNITY. WE PUBLISH A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER, SUPPORT COMMUNITY ART PROJECTS, FESTIVALS, CLEAN-UPS, ENGAGE WITH NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCILS, TAKE OUT AND PAY FOR MEMBERSHIPS IN THIRTEEN NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATIONS, HAVE A CONTRACT WITH THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY ADOPTION PROGRAM TO CLEAN A SECTION OF THE 5 FREWAY, AND PAY FOR ADVERTISING IN LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND EVENT PROGRAMS.
THE UPTOWN GAY AND LESBIAN ALLIANCES THIRD AND NORMALLY ROBUST PROGRAM IS MEMBER SUPPORT WHERE WE FUND MONTHLY POT-LUCK MIXERS, PLAN OUTINGS WHICH MAY INVOLVE SUPPLYING TRANSPORTATION, TAKE PART IN THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC OUTREACH, CARE AND CONTACT WITH MEMBERS UNDERGOING HEALTH ISSUES, GRIEF, ISOLATION, ETC.
