RENSSELAER PLATEAU ALLIANCE, INC. (RPA) SOLD FOUR PARCELS OF LAND TOTALING 1,176-ACRES TO NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION (NYSDEC). THIS DOUBLED THE SIZE OF THE PITTSTOWN STATE FOREST, COMPLETED A FOUR-YEAR LONG EFFORT AND ALLOWED RPA TO SATISFY SEVERAL LOANS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROJECT. RPA ALSO SOLD ANOTHER 76-ACRE PROPERTY TO NYSDEC THAT FILLED A GAP IN FUTURE STATE FOREST LAND IN THE TOWN OF POESTENKILL.
RPA EMBARKED ON ITS FIRST MAJOR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, THE FORESTS FOREVER CAMPAIGN, WITH A GOAL OF RAISING $2 MILLION FOR LAND CONSERVATION AND LONG-TERM STEWARDSHIP. RPA RAISED OVER $1.2 MILLION IN THE FIRST 8 MONTHS OF THE CAMPAIGN. AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING IN OCTOBER 2022, THE CAMPAIGN GOAL HAS BEEN EXCEEDED, AND COMPLETED A YEAR AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. NOTE: RPA HAD NEVER BEFORE RAISED MORE THAN $100,000 AT ANY GIVEN TIME FROM INDIVIDUAL DONORS.
RPA ACQUIRED 5 NEW PROPERTIES TOTALING 377-ACRES AND HAD CONTRACTS ON AN ADDITIONAL 443-ACRES TO BE ACQUIRED EARLY IN 2023. THESE PROPERTIES CONSTITUTE THREE NEW COMMUNITY FORESTS THAT WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR RECREATION IN THREE DIFFERENT TOWNS IN THE REGION. RPA RECEIVED A U.S. FOREST SERVICE COMMUNITY FOREST PROGRAM GRANT OF $276,000 TO HELP WITH THE ACQUISTION OF 418-ACRES. RPA OPENED ITS FIRST ADA WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE NATURE TRAIL.
