ELLA BAKER CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS (THE ORGANIZATION") IS BUILDING A MEMBERSHIP-BASED MOVEMENT TO ADVANCE JUSTICE REINVESTMENT BY REALLOCATING RESOURCES AWAY FROM PRISONS AND PUNISHMENT AND TOWARD FAMILY-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS THAT IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY, AND PROSPERITY FOR COMMUNITIES.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

JUSTICE REFORM AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZING: WE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED LOCAL CAMPAIGNS TO HOLD THE ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF ACCOUNTABLE FOR CREATING SAFETY AND JUSTICE FOR ALAMEDA COUNTY RESIDENTS. WE IMPLEMENT TRUTH AND REINVESTMENT AS A STRATEGY TO HIGHLIGHT NUMEROUS REPORTS OF WRONGFUL DEATHS, EXCESSIVE FORCE WITH AND WITHOUT WEAPONS, AND ABUSE AND BATTERY, BUILDING PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR REDUCING THE SHERIFF'S BUDGET AND INVESTING RESOURCES IN MUCH NEEDED COMMUNITY SERVICES. NIGHT OUT FOR SAFETY AND LIBERATION (NOSL): IS AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT REACHES DOZENS OF CITIES ACROSS THE US, HELPING TO CHANGE THE CONVERSATION ON PUBLIC SAFETY TO BE LESS FOCUSED ON FEAR, PUNISHMENT, AND CRIMINALIZATION AND MORE FOCUSED ON HOW COMMUNITIES CAN BUILD EQUITY AND POWER BY INVESTING AT THE LOCAL LEVEL. HEALING THROUGH ACTION: IN THE SUMMER OF 2021, EBC LAUNCHED HEALING THROUGH ACTION (HTA) TO CREATE A HEALING SPACE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES TO STATE VIOLENCE. MOST PARTICIPANTS IN OUR INAUGURAL COHORT ARE WOMEN WHOSE CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN HAVE BEEN HARASSED OR MURDERED DURING VIOLENT ENCOUNTERS WITH POLICE OR WHILE INCARCERATED. OVER THE PAST 12 WEEKS, HTA HAS GATHERED IMPACTED FAMILIES TOGETHER INTO HEALING CIRCLES OFFERING TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT GROUP MEMBERS IN THEIR HEALING JOURNEY. THROUGH THESE TRANSFORMATIVE CIRCLES, THEY ARE LEARNING ADVOCACY SKILLS TO LEAD THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE.INSIDE OUTSIDE FELLOWSHIP: IN 2021 WE LAUNCHED THE INSIDE/OUTSIDE FELLOWSHIP IS A NEW DUAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DESIGNED TO INCREASE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ELLA BAKER CENTER'S POLICY WORK BY PEOPLE WHO ARE DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY THE POLICIES WE ARE ADVOCATING TO CHANGE. WE BUILD SKILLS, LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES, AND ACCESS TO POWER.

RESTORE OAKLAND: WE CONTINUED BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR RESTORE OAKLAND, REACHING MORE THAN $15 MILLION IN TOTAL FUNDS SECURED FOR THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN BY THE END OF 2019. STAFF FROM RESTORE OAKLAND 501(C)(3) CONTINUED CONDUCTING LISTENING SESSIONS AND OUTREACH TO LEARN ABOUT LOCAL NEEDS AND PRIORITIES. STAFF REACHED MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE THROUGH LISTENING SESSIONS AND 300 THROUGH OUTREACH EFFORTS.
