INTERNET ARCHIVE WAS FOUNDED IN 1996 TO BUILD AN INTERNET LIBRARY WITH THE PURPOSE OF OFFERING PERMANENT ACCESS FOR RESEARCHERS, HISTORIANS AND SCHOLARS TO HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS THAT EXIST IN DIGITAL FORMAT INCLUDING TEXTS, AUDIO, MOVIES, IMAGES, SOFTWARE AND WEB PAGES.

IN 2021, WE CONTINUED ADVANCING OUR PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGY FOR DIGITIZING BOOKS, FILM, AND MUSIC; AND EXPANDED OUR COLLECTIONS TO INCLUDE MICROFILM, ALONG WITH WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTS FOR USERS.WE INCREASED MATERIALS DIGITIZED WITH THE TOTAL ARCHIVED AT MORE THAN 99 PETABYTES OF UNIQUE DATA, WHICH CONSISTS OF MORE THAN 80+ MILLION PUBLIC MEDIA ITEMS (TEXT, MOVIES, AUDIO, IMAGES, ETC.). WORLDWIDE, WE ARE A TOP WEBSITE DESTINATION, WITH OUR WEB SITE TRAFFIC GROWING TO 1,600,000 UNIQUE WEB SITE USERS PER DAY, LARGELY DUE TO THE WAYBACK MACHINE AND USERS HAVING ACCESS TO ITS 625 BILLION WEB PAGES.ORGANIZATIONALLY, THE ARCHIVE REMAINS STABLE WITH ABOUT THE SAME NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, AND CONTINUING TO ADAPT TO A NEAR COMPLETE REMOTE WORK ENVIRONMENT. FINANCIALLY, OUR OVERALL FEE FOR SERVICE AND BASE DONOR BASE REMAINED STABLE AND CONSISTENT. DUE TO THE EASING AND ADAPTING TO THE PANDEMIC A PARTIAL RECOVERY IN DIGITIZING OF PHYSICAL ITEMS OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR RESULTED. DUE TO SPECIAL PROJECTS OUR CONTRACTORS AND STAFFING COSTS INCREASED, WHICH IS ANTICIPATED TO BENEFIT OUR DIGITAL CONVERSION ARCHIVING AND ENHANCING EFFORTS. THESE COSTS WERE OFFSET BY ONE-TIME DONATIONS, SPECIAL DONATIONS, AND PPP REVENUE.
