TO INCREASE THE ISLAND'S FOOD SECURITY AND CONNECT PEOPLE TO THE SUPPORTING RESOURCES.

FREE GROCERY SERVICES THROUGH PICK-UP OR HOME DELIVERY - IN 2021, THE VASHON FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED FREE GROCERIES TO ANYONE IN NEED, THROUGH ORDER AND PICK-UP OR HOME DELIVERY TO AN AVERAGE OF 220 HOUSEHOLDS PER WEEK. OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, WE PROVIDED FREE GROCERIES TO APPROXIMATELY 750 UNIQUE HOUSEHOLDS COMPRISING OVER 1700 INDIVIDUALS. IN 2021, 59% OF GROCERY SERVICES WERE PROVIDED THROUGH DIRECT HOME DELIVERIES AND 41% THROUGH ONSITE PICK-UP.


SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM - THE VASHON FOOD BANK HAS OPERATED A YOUTH SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM, CALLED PICNICS IN THE PARK, SINCE 2014. HISTORICALLY, NUTRITIOUS MEALS ARE OFFERED TO ISLAND YOUTH IN A LOCAL PARK ALONG WITH ENGAGING ACTIVITIES. IN LIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, IN 2020 AND 2021, THE PROGRAM MODEL SHIFTED TO PICNICS TO GO, WHERE ANY AND ALL ISLANDERS COULD GET A FREE LUNCH AT THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL OR AT ONE OF 12 REMOTE DROP-OFF SPOTS SERVED BY A RENTED SCHOOL BUS. IN THE SUMMER OF 2021, WE SERVED AN AVERAGE OF 204 LUNCHES PER DAY FOR A TOTAL OF 8,996 LUNCHES TO OVER 700 ISLAND YOUTH AND ADULTS.
