Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
THE LAB GIVES SIGNIFICANT FUNDING, TIME, AND SPACE TO TRADITIONALLY UNDERREPRESENTED ARTISTS. WE SEEK TO TRANSFORM ALONGSIDE ARTISTIC PRACTICES IN ORDER TO ENGAGE MEANINGFULLY WITH VISIONARY COMMUNITIES WHOSE ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL REALITIES HAVE BEEN IGNORED FOR TOO LONG, TO THE IMPOVERISHMENT OF US ALL. IN THIS, THE LAB IS CATALYST FOR ARTISTIC EXPERIMENTATION.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN 2021, THROUGH THE FORUM AND OUR RETURN TO IN PERSON PROGRAMMING, THE LAB BROUGHT TOGETHER MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE IN DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL SPACE. THESE RITUAL GATHERINGS REMIND US THAT THE APPEARANCE OF ART IS ITSELF A SOCIAL ACT - WHETHER IT BE ANGEL BAT DAWID COMPELLING US TO SING, LUIS CAMNITZER PROPOSING AN INSTITUTIONAL REIMAGINING, OR ASHER HARTMAN'S INTUITIVE THEATER - WE GIVE SPACE, TIME, MONEY, AND EFFORT TO BUILD A COMMUNITY THAT PROTECTS AND PRESERVES THE SINGULARITY OF ART. THE $175K WE GAVE THIS YEAR HELPED 106 ARTISTS PAY FOR RENT, HEALTHCARE, AND STUDIO SPACE. THIS ATTENTION TO OUR SHARED MATERIAL WELFARE AND CREATIVE CONVIVIALITY IS WHAT MAKES THE LAB AN EXPERIMENT IN FREEDOM. ADDITIONALLY, WE HAVE COMMISSIONED NEW PROJECTS WITH INDIRA ALLEGRA AND CARRIE HOTT. THEY WILL RECEIVE AROUND $75,000 EACH, KEYS TO OUR SPACE, THE LOGIN FOR OUR WEBSITE, AND THE OPTION TO REVISE EVERY ASPECT OF THE LAB'S OPERATIONS. WE WANT TO KNOW HOW FAR THEY CAN TAKE THAT INQUIRY AND HOW MUCH WE CAN BEND TO MAKE THE PROJECT OF ART POSSIBLE ON EVERY LEVEL. INDIRA ALLEGRA WILL CREATE "THE DISPERSAL OF A FEELING IS ANOTHER SUBJECT", A DANCE AND INSTALLATION-BASED PERFORMANCE WHICH EXPLORES THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF INDECISION - THE EVERYDAY MOVEMENTS, TICS, UTTERANCES, AND MOMENTS OF QUIET ASSOCIATED WITH NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO NEXT. CARRIE HOTT'S "OUR SHIVER" ASKS LONG OVERDUE QUESTIONS ABOUT TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEMS THAT MAKE UP THE 21ST CENTURY'S FUNDAMENTAL SCAFFOLDING, WHILE PROPOSING COLLECTIVE ALTERNATIVES AND ACCESSIBLE, ECOLOGICAL, AND IMAGINATIVE SOLUTIONS. CAN THE LAB MODEL ANOTHER WAY OF BEING ONLINE?
