PROVIDING CLEAN WATER, ENERGY EFFICIENT COOKSTOVES , PLANTING TREES IN UGANDA

RURAL UGANDANS ARE AMONG THE 4 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD STILL USING OPEN FIRE PITS IN HUTS FOR COOKING. EXPOSURE TO SMOKE CAUSES MILLIONS OF DEATHS EVERY YEAR AND CAUSES RESPIRATORY AND EYE DIESEASES. AN OPEN FIRE CONSUMES LARGE AMOUNTS OF WOOD AND RELEASES LARGE AMOUNTS OF CARBON INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. AID AFRICA DESIGNED A SIMPLE SOLUTION-A SIX BRICK ROCKET STOVE. THE BRICKS ARE MADE LOCALLY FROM READILY AVAILABLE CLAY AND ORGANIC MATTER. AID AFRICA DELIVERS THE BRICKS AND TEACHES VILLAGERS HOW TO ASSEMBLE AND MAINTAIN THEIR STOVES EVERY STOVE INSTALLATION IS PLOTTED WITH GPS COORDINATES. THE STOVE REDUCES HOUSEHOLD EMISSIONS BY 75%, COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL FIRE COOKING. IN ADDITION TO REDUCING REPIRATORY ILLNESS, OUR STOVES REDUCE SORE RED EYES, EARLY ONSET CATARACTS, BURN ACCIDENTS, AND HOUSE FIRES. OUR STOVES USE 1/3 THE WOOD OF TRADITIONAL COOKING FIRES.
UGANDA IS RANKED 161 OF 187 ON THE HUMAN DEVELOPEMENT INDEX. 40% OF THE POULATION DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER SOURCES. MOST UGANDANS OBTAIN WATER FROM RIVERS, PONDS, AND UNPROTECTED SPRINGS. OFTEN THEY SHARE THESE RESOURCES WITH LIVESTOCK AND OTHER ANIMALS. INHABITANTS ARE VULNERABLE TO COMMUNICABLE AND NONCOMMUNICABLE WATER DISEASES. THESE ARE A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THESE COMMUNITIES. WELL DRILLING RIGS ARE IN SHORT SUPPY, EXPENSIVE, COSTLY TO MAINTAIN , AND IT'S DIFFICULT TO TRANSPORT THEM TO RURAL COMMUNITIES. AID AFRICA HAS DEVELOPED A SIMPLE DRILLING TOOL AND RIG. COMMUNITY MEMBERS WORK WITH US TO DRILL THEIR OWN WELLS. WE ALSO REPAIR BROKEN WELLS AS WELL AS TEACH VILLAGES HOW TO BUILD SHELTERED SPRINGS.
YEARS OF WAR, REFUGEE CAMPS, AND UNSUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL AND LIVING PRACTICES HAVE LEFT NORTHERN UGANDA STRIPPED OF IT'S NATIVE TREES. AID AFRICA RAISES AND DISTRIBUTES THOUSANDS OF SEEDLINGS TO PROVIDE VILLAGES WITH FRUIT FOR NUTRITION AND AS AN INCOME SOURCE. AID AFRICA ALSO RAISES AND DISTRIBUTES TREES THAT CAN BE USED FOR SHADE AND WHOSE BRANCHES CAN BE USED FOR FUEL AS WELL AS BUILDING MATERIALS.
