Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
AN INDEPENDENT, BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING HOW HEALTH IS MAINTAINED IN THE FACE OF GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH DISEASE DEVELOPMENT.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE CARVALHO LAB STUDIES HOW, WHEN, AND WHY HUMAN GENOMIC VARIANTS OCCUR AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE AND DISABILITY.
THE STUBBS LAB IS FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING HOW THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN GENES AND ENVIRONMENT SHAPES BRAIN DEVELOPMENT, AND HOW THAT INTERPLAY ULTIMATELY INFLUENCES BEHAVIOR. WE STUDY THE FOLE OF GENE REGULATION THE PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR ORCHESTRATING HOW GENES ARE USED IN EACH BRAIN CELL TO SPECIFY UNIQUE FUNCTIONS AND HOW WHAT HAPPENS DURING OUR LIFETIME LEADS TO CHANGES IN THOSE PROCESSES.
THE HAGOPIAN LAB RESEARCHES WAYS TO PREDICT AND PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF TYPE 1 DIABETES, A DISEASE AFFECTING OVER ONE MILLION AMERICAN CHILDREN AND ADULTS. NOT EVERYONE WITH GENETIC RISK FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES DEVELOPS THE DISEASE. WHY NOT? SCIENTISTS IN THE HAGOPIAN LAB BELIEVE ANSWERS LIE IN THE ENVIRONMENT. THEY ARE ONE OF 6 LABS PARTICIPATING IN AN INTERNATIONAL STUDY FOLLOWING 8,000 CHILDREN WITH HIGH GENETIC RISK FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES. THE HAGOPIAN LAB ALSO DEVELOPS POPULATION BASED NEWBORN SCREENING METHODS TO PREDICT WHO IS AT RISK. THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO PREVENT THE DISEASE ENTIRELY.
EXPERIMENTING IN YEAST ALLOWS THE DUDLEY LAB TO MAKE DISCOVERIES THAT GO BEYOND THE LAB WITH THE POWER TO CHANGE HOW SCIENTISTS AROUND THE GLOBE APPROACH GENETIC RESEARCH. FROM PERFORMING LARGESCALE EXPERIMENTS TO DISCOVERING NEW ANTIFUNGAL TREATMENTS, THE DUDLEY LAB IS A WORLD LEADER IN USING YEAST TO ANSWER FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ABOUT BIOLOGY. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT APPLYING AND DEVELOPING NOW TECHNOLOGIES AND ABOUT TRANSLATING DISCOVERIES FROM OUR LAB INTO REALWORLD APPLICATIONS. THE DUDLEY LAB EXPERIMENTS IN YEAST BECAUSE YEAST CELLS FUNCTION IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS HUMAN CELLS. HOWEVER, WITH YEAST, WE CAN PERFORM EXPERIMENTS MUCH FASTER, AND ON A GRANDER SCALE, THAN SCIENTISTS CAN WITH HUMAN CELLS.
