THE MISSION OF OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO ASSIST IN THE EMPOWERMENT OF SURVIVORS THROUGH: COUNSELING, A 24-HOUR CRISIS NETWORK, MEDICAL, LEGAL AND SYSTEM ADVOCACY. THE ORGANIZATION IS ALSO COMMITTED TO CHANGING ATTITUDES THAT FOSTER AND PERPETUATE VIOLENCE. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES SERICES TO: DEAF SURVIVORS, DEAF-BLIND SURVIVORS, AND HARD-OF-HEARING SURVIVORS.

JANUARY 2021: SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED BOUNDARIES TO THE EMPOWERING DEAF TEENS SERIES (EDTS) GROUPS OF DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEYVE LEARNED ABOUT BOUNDARIES AND HOW TO KEEP SAFE FROM BEING ABUSED. FEBRUARY 2021: SLCAD HOSTED THE 11TH ANNUAL SWEETHEART CHALLENGE EVENT IN ST. GEORGE. THIS CONTINUES TO BE A SUCCESSFUL EVENT THAT THE SOUTHERN UTAH DEAF COMMUNITY LOOKS FORWARD TO EVERY YEAR. THE PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN DEAF COMMUNITY. FEBRUARY 2021: SLCAD STAFF PROVIDED TRAINING ON HOW TO MAKE THEIR SHELTER ACCESSIBLE FOR THE DEAF & HARD OF HEARING CLIENTS. THIS VIRTUAL TRAINING WAS FOR THE NEW HORIZON SHELTER STAFF. IT HAD 25 ATTENDEES AND WAS SUCCESSFUL. FEBRUARY 2021: SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED KINDNESS TO THE EDTS GROUPS OF DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY LEARNED ABOUT KINDNESS AND HOW TO BE RESPECTFUL TO KEEP THEIR COMMUNITY SAFE. THE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED, ASKING GOOD QUESTIONS AND EVERYONE LEARNED FROM EACH OTHER. FEBRUARY 2021: SLCAD STAFF PROVIDED TRAINING ON HOW TO MAKE THEIR SHELTER ACCESSIBLE FOR THE DEAF & HARD OF HEARING CLIENTS. THIS VIRTUAL TRAINING WAS FOR THE CANYON CREEK CRISIS CENTER & SHELTER STAFF. THEY ASKED GOOD QUESTIONS REGARDING HOW TO GET INTERPRETERS. IT WAS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE. FEBRUARY-MARCH 2021: UTAH SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF (USD) INVITED SLCAD STAFF TO PROVIDE A PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL GROUP TO THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR 6 WEEKS. THEY DISCUSSED HOW TO KEEP THEMSELVES SAFE FROM STALKING, HARASSMENT, AND DATING VIOLENCE. A SAFE SPACE WAS CREATED FOR THEM TO DISCUSS IN THE GROUP WITH SLCAD STAFF AND USD STAFF. THE STUDENTS LEARNED A LOT AND HAD A GREAT STIMULATING DISCUSSION AMONG THEMSELVES. MARCH 2021: SLCAD STAFF PROVIDED TRAINING ON HOW TO MAKE THEIR SHELTER ACCESSIBLE FOR DEAF & HARD OF HEARING CLIENTS. THIS WAS A VIRTUAL TRAINING FOR THE PEACE HOUSE SHELTER STAFF. THEY ASKED SOME GOOD QUESTIONS REGARDING HOW TO GET INTERPRETERS. IT WAS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE. MARCH 2021: SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED SAFETY & TRUST TO THE EDTS GROUPS OF DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY LEARNED ABOUT HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM HARM AND HOW TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE THAT THEY CAN TRUST. THIS PRESENTATION WAS EFFECTIVE BECAUSE THE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED AND ASKED GOOD QUESTIONS. APRIL 2021: SLCAD STAFF PRESENTED CONSENT TO THE EDTS GROUPS OF DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY LEARNED ABOUT CONSENT BY CONVERSATION, AND THEY HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SAY NO IN DIFFERENT WAYS SUCH AS VERBALLY NO, SHAKING THEIR HEAD NO, WALKING AWAY, OR NONVERBALLY NEGATIVE WAY TO SEND A MESSAGE SAYING NO. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS. THEY PARTICIPATED AND PRACTICED HANDS-ON FOR THE CONSENT ACTIVITIES. MAY 2021: SLCAD STAFF SELF-CARE TO THE EDTS GROUP OF DEAF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE CONCEPT OF SELF-CARE WAS DISCUSSED FROM A POSITIVE PERSPECTIVE. SELF-CARE IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL TO HAVE IN COMBATING VIOLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY. THE STUDENTS HAD MANY DIFFERENT IDEAS ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES. JUNE 2021: SLCAD STAFF HOSTED A SECOND ANNUAL SEGO LILYS PRIDE BRUNCH AT IHOP. WE HAD LGBTQ+ AND ALLIES GATHERED AND ATE BRUNCH TOGETHER. SEGO LILY PROVIDED INFORMATION ON HOW TO GET HELP, AS WELL AS OUR HIGH STANDARDS OF CLIENT CONFIDENTIALITY. THEY HAD A GREAT TIME. JUNE 2021: SLCAD HOSTED THE VERY FIRST LGBTQ+ HANGOUTS ON A ZOOM CALL. DEAF, HARD OF HEARING, AND CODAS MET UP IN A CLOSED SPACE TO SHARE CONCERNS THEY HAVE REGARDING SAFETY, AS WELL AS ANY ABUSE THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED. HANGOUTS IS CONSIDERED A SUPPORT GROUP FOR THE LGBTQ+ IN THE COMMUNITY. IT WAS SUCCESSFUL AND THEY ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT TIME THEY MEET UP. JUNE 2021: SLCAD STAFF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING TRAINERS WERE INVITED TO PRESENT TO THE UNIFIED POLICE DEPARTMENT IN SALT LAKE CITY TO PRESENT ON HOW TO WORK WITH DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITIES EFFECTIVELY. IT WAS EYE-OPENING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TO SEE THE ACTUAL PERSONS FROM EACH COMMUNITY. AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATION, THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS. THEY PARTICIPATED AND APPRECIATED OUR TIME TO PRESENT TO THEM. JUNE 2021: SLCAD STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN THE ANTI-RACIST WORKSHOP GIVEN BY A BLACK DEAF FEMALE. THEY LEARNED A LOT ABOUT HOW TO MAKE OUR SPACE SAFE FOR THE BLACK DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITY. JUNE 2021: SLCAD STAFF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING TRAINERS WERE INVITED TO PRESENT TO THE SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT TO PRESENT ON HOW TO WORK WITH DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITIES EFFECTIVELY. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AND ADVOCATES WERE ENTHRALLED. THEY ASKED A LOT OF EXCELLENT QUESTIONS. IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL EVENT. JULY 2021: SLCAD STAFF WAS INVITED TO THE DEAF SENIOR CITIZEN GATHERING AT THE SANDERSON COMMUNITY CENTER FOR THE DEAF & HARD OF HEARING. THEY HAD LUNCH AND THE SLCAD STAFF SAT AMONG THEM. THE DEAF SENIOR CITIZENS LEARNED ABOUT SLCAD SERVICES AND HOW THEY CAN GET HELP. IT WAS AN ENLIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. JULY 2021: SLCAD STAFF PROVIDED TRAINING ON HOW TO MAKE THEIR SHELTER ACCESSIBLE FOR THE DEAF & HARD OF HEARING CLIENTS. THIS WAS A VIRTUAL TRAINING FOR THE DOVE SHELTER AND CENTER STAFF. THEY ASKED A LOT OF GOOD QUESTIONS REGARDING THE CONFIDENTIALITY OF ASL INTERPRETERS. IT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL TRAINING. SEPTEMBER 2021: SLCAD STAFF HAD TRAUMA-INFORMED APPROACH TRAINING GIVEN BY ABUSED DEAF WOMENS ADVOCACY SERVICES STAFF (ADWAS), AND A WELL-KNOWN UTAH DEAF MEMBER. WE HAD A FEW NEW STAFF WHO ARE NEW IN THIS FIELD. THE STAFF HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS REGARDING APPROPRIATE APPROACHES TO VICTIMS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING SEXUAL ASSAULT, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, DATING VIOLENCE, AND STALKING. IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL TRAINING. SEPTEMBER 2021: SLCAD HOSTED THE VERY FIRST SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS IN BOTH LOCATIONS (SALT LAKE AND ST. GEORGE). WE PROVIDED BATTERY-OPERATED CANDLES FOR VIGILS TO HONOR THE 4 MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY LOST TO SUICIDE OVER THE PAST YEAR. WE HAD GOOD ATTENDANCE AT BOTH LOCATIONS. IT WAS A SOBERING EXPERIENCE. OCTOBER 2021: SLCAD WAS AWARDED THE RURAL GRANT FROM THE DEPT. OF JUSTICE UNDER THE OFFICE OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. SLCAD IS LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPANDING MORE PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH TO THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING COMMUNITY OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS. OCTOBER 2021: SLCAD STAFF PROVIDED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS COMMUNITY EDUCATION. SOUTHERN UTAH COUNSELOR PRESENTED ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND HOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN GET HELP FROM SLCAD AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS. IT WAS SUCCESSFUL. OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2021: SLCAD NORTHERN UTAH COUNSELOR PROVIDED A 6-WEEK SUPPORT GROUP TO THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT THE UTAH SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF & BLIND. THE STUDENTS RECEIVED RESOURCES AND PARTICIPATED IN THE INTERACTIVE DISCUSSIONS. THEY EXPRESSED THEIR INTEREST IN HAVING THE SUPPORT GROUP AGAIN NEXT YEAR. NOVEMBER 2021: SLCAD HOSTED A COMMUNITY EDUCATION WORKSHOP CALLED MENTAL HEALTH & THE BENEFITS OF GRATITUDE AT THE SOUTHERN UTAH DEAF & HARD OF HEARING PROGRAMS IN ST. GEORGE. WE HAD A GOOD NUMBER OF PEOPLE, AND THEY PARTICIPATED IN THE GRATITUDE ACTIVITIES BY WRITING DOWN WHAT THEY ARE GRATEFUL FOR. IT WAS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.
