THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO LEAD, STRENGTHEN, AND SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY ACTION NETWORK IN ORDER TO BUILD THRIVING COMMUNITIES AND END POVERTY.

EARN IT, KEEP IT, SAVE IT THE ORGANIZATION LEADS A STATEWIDE COALITION OF PARTNERS FROM THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND NONPROFIT SECTORS IN THE EARN IT, KEEP IT, SAVE IT PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM AIMS TO STRENGTHEN FAMILY FINANCIAL STABILITY THROUGH EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT OUTREACH, FREE TAX PREPARATION, AND ASSET FORMATION PROGRAMS. IN SPITE OF LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES THAT CLOSED MANY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) SITES, THE COALITION HELPED OVER 11,211 LOW AND MODERATE INCOME FAMILIES FILE STATE AND FEDERAL INCOME TAXES FOR FREE. OF THOSE RETURNS, AT LEAST 2,163 HOUSEHOLDS ACCESSED MORE THAN 3,677,734 IN EITC CREDITS.


TRAINING & TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE THE ORGANIZATION WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UTAHS STATE COMMUNITY SERVICES OFFICE TO PROVIDE TRAINING, SUPPORT, AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON THE COMMUNITY SERVICES BLOCK GRANT TO THE NINE COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCIES IN UTAH. DURING FY21, CAP UTAH HELD A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE THAT HAD 274 UNDUPLICATED ATTENDEES. THE AGENCY PROVIDED AN ADDITIONAL 22 TRAINING EVENTS TO THE NETWORK AND OTHER HUMAN SERVICES PROVIDERS. THE AGENCY ALSO SUPPORTED 8 LOCAL AGENCY DATABASES USED FOR CSBG ANNUAL REPORTING. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PARTICIPATED IN U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES' HUMAN CAPACITY AND COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION (HTTC) INITIATIVE THROUGH THE REGIONAL PERFORMANCE AND INNOVATION CONSORTIUM (REGION 8 RPIC). THROUGH THIS PROCESS, THE AGENCY WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY CHARACTERISTICS AND INITIATIVES FROM TWO COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCIES IN UTAH THAT MOVE FAMILIES FROM POVERTY.


ADVOCACY & POLICY RESEARCH THE ORGANIZATION WORKS TO KEEP THE STRUGGLES OF THOSE IN POVERTY THROUGHOUT THE STATE IN THE MIND OF LEGISLATORS WHEN THEY ARE CONSIDERING LAWS AND BUDGET CHANGES THAT COULD AFFECT THIS VULNERABLE POPULATION. THIS IS DONE BY EDUCATING LAWMAKERS, KEEPING THEM CURRENT WITH POVERTY TRENDS, AND WORKING WITH THEM TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE POVERTY IN UTAH. DURING FY21, CAP UTAH GATHERED AND ANALYZED DATA FROM COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCIES TO INFORM STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS ABOUT NEEDS RELATED TO HOUSING, FOOD, AND OTHER EMERGENCY SERVICES. THE ORGANIZATION PARTNERED WITH OTHER ADVOCACY GROUPS TO EXPLAIN MORATORIUM ON EVICTIONS AND THE NEEDS OF COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCIES WHICH EXPERIENCED UP TO 650% GROWTH IN SOME PROGRAMS. CAP UTAH ALSO HELD TWO POVERTY SIMULATIONS THAT ENGAGED OVER 175 UNDUPLICATED INDIVIDUALS IN BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES AND CONDITIONS OF POVERTY IN UTAH. ATTENDEES INCLUDED LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS, HUMAN SERVICES PROVIDERS, EDUCATORS, FAITH-BASED LEADERS, AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
