ORGAN RECOVERY & PLACEMENT SERVICES: DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA (DNA) MAXIMIZED THE AVAILABILITY OF HIGH QUALITY ORGANS AND TISSUES FOR TRANSPLANT AND RESEARCH BY PROVIDING SERVICES TO DONORS, RECIPIENTS, DONOR FAMILIES, DONOR HOSPITALS, AND TRANSPLANT HOSPITALS. IN 2021, DESPITE THE ONGOING GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND THE MANY CHALLENGES TO THE DONATION PROCESS, DNA HAD ITS SECOND HIGHEST NUMBER OF RECOVERED DONORS, WITH ONLY 3 FEWER DONORS THE RECORD SETTING YEAR IN 2019. DNA FACILITATED THE DONATION AND RECOVERY OF 1,039 ORGANS OF WHICH 860 WERE TRANSPLANTED. THESE ORGANS WERE RECOVERED FROM 315 ORGAN DONORS. IN 2021, 456 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE KIDNEYS, 10 PEOPLE RECEIVED KIDNEYS EN BLOC, 95 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE HEARTS, 206 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LIVERS, 6 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LIVER SEGMENTS, 27 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE PANCREATA, 5 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LUNGS, 52 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LUNGS EN BLOC, 2 PEOPLE RECEIVED A TRANSPLANTABLE INTESTINE AND 1 PERSON RECEIVED A TRANSPLANTABLE HEART/LUNG EN BLOC. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION FACILITATED THE IMPORTATION OF 578 TRANSPLANTABLE ORGANS FROM OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS.


TISSUE & OCULAR RECOVERY & PLACEMENT SERVICES: THE ORGANIZATION ALSO FACILITATED THE DONATION AND RECOVERY OF VARIOUS TISSUES FOR TRANSPLANT PURPOSES.IN 2021, DESPITE THE CONTINUED CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY COVID-19 WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEFERRAL OF DONORS AS WELL AS A DECREASE IN ELECTIVE SURGERIES PERFORMED, 1,651 PEOPLE DONATED BONE, CARDIOVASCULAR, OR SKIN TISSUE. OF THESE, 1,105 PEOPLE DONATED BONE FOR ORTHOPEDIC PURPOSES. AS THE NUMBER ONE RECOVERY AGENCY FOR OUR HEART VALVE RECOVERY PARTNER, WE FACILITATED THE DONATION OF ANOTHER RECORD-SETTING 394 HEART VALVES AFTER SETTING THE PREVIOUS RECORD IN 2020 WITH 387 HEART VALVES PROCURED. HEART VALVES ARE MOST FREQUENTLY TRANSPLANTED IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS. THERE WERE ALSO 874 SAPHENOUS OR FEMORAL VEINS DONATED IN 2021. THE GENEROSITY OF 1,479 PEOPLE RESULTED IN DONATED SKIN FOR BURN VICTIMS AND RESTORATIVE PROCEDURES. THE 1,651 DONORS ALSO DONATED OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR AND ORTHOPEDIC TISSUES, INCLUDING TISSUES USED TO DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF REJECTION IN ORGAN RECIPIENTS.IN ADDITION, 898 PEOPLE DONATED CORNEAS THAT RESULTED IN 1,009 CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS, OF WHICH 47 WERE PROVIDED GRATIS FOR THOSE WHO COULD NOT AFFORD A TRANSPLANT OTHERWISE, WHILE 211 WERE PROVIDED AT NOMINAL COST TO INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS WHO COULD OTHERWISE NOT AFFORD A TRANSPLANT. THESE DONORS ALSO DONATED SCLERA FOR TRANSPLANTATION PURPOSES.


HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: THE HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAXIMIZING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DONORS RECOVERED FOR TRANSPLANT IN ARIZONA THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INDIVIDUALIZED DONOR PROGRAMS BASED ON COMPREHENSIVE HOSPITAL ASSESSMENT, ANALYSIS OF THE DONOR POTENTIAL, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ONGOING QUALITY PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND INITIATION AND FOSTERING OF EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY.CURRENTLY THIS DEPARTMENT HAS 16 FULL-TIME COORDINATORS/ASSOCIATES, A SUPERVISOR, A MANAGER AND ONE DIRECTOR WHO, IN ADDITION TO THE VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND REFERRAL SERVICES, PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SERVICES TO OVER 120 HOSPITALS AS WELL AS HOSPICES AND OTHER DONATION REFERRAL ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT ARIZONA. DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA (DNA) CONTINUES TO UTILIZE THE BEST PRACTICES AS DEFINED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES' BREAKTHROUGH COLLABORATIVES FOR ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION. THIS INCLUDES ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN REGIONAL AND NATIONAL IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS. THESE EFFORTS CONTINUE TO HELP US MAXIMIZE CONVERSION RATES, DONORS AND THE NUMBER OF ORGANS TRANSPLANTED PER DONOR IN ARIZONA.
