ORGAN RECOVERY & PLACEMENT SERVICES: DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA (DNA) MAXIMIZED THE AVAILABILITY OF HIGH-QUALITY ORGANS AND TISSUES FOR TRANSPLANT AND RESEARCH BY PROVIDING SERVICES TO DONORS, RECIPIENTS, DONOR FAMILIES, DONOR HOSPITALS, AND TRANSPLANT HOSPITALS. IN 2022, DNA SET A RECORD FOR THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF RECOVERED ORGAN DONORS AND ORGANS RECOVERED AND INTENDED FOR TRANSPLANT DNA FACILITATED THE DONATION AND RECOVERY OF 1,083 ORGANS OF WHICH 849 WERE TRANSPLANTED. THESE ORGANS WERE RECOVERED FROM 346 ORGAN DONORS. IN 2022, 459 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE KIDNEYS, 6 PEOPLE RECEIVED KIDNEYS EN BLOC, 93 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE HEARTS, 189 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LIVERS, 12 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LIVER SEGMENTS, 28 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE PANCREATA, 4 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LUNGS, AND 58 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTABLE LUNGS EN BLOC. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION FACILITATED THE IMPORTATION OF 625 TRANSPLANTABLE ORGANS FROM OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS. AS DNA CONTINUES TO EXPAND ITS EFFORTS TO IDENTIFY EVERY POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE LIVES, THE ORGANIZATION IDENTIFIED ANOTHER 141 POTENTIAL ORGAN DONORS FROM WHICH RECOVERY EFFORTS WERE ULTIMATELY UNSUCCESSFUL WHILE ALSO FACILITATING THE RECOVERY OF CLOSE TO 150 ORGANS FOR RESEARCH. NONE OF THESE EFFORTS ARE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE GENEROSITY OF THE DONORS AND WILLING DONORS IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA AND THESE RECORD NUMBERS ARE A TRIBUTE TO THAT GENEROSITY.

TISSUE & OCULAR RECOVERY & PLACEMENT SERVICES: THE ORGANIZATION ALSO FACILITATED THE DONATION AND RECOVERY OF VARIOUS TISSUES FOR TRANSPLANT PURPOSES.IN 2022, DESPITE THE CONTINUED CHALLENGES DUE TO COVID-19 AND ITS AFTERMATH WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEFERRAL OF DONORS AS WELL AS A DECREASE IN ELECTIVE SURGERIES PERFORMED, 1,293 PEOPLE DONATED BONE, CARDIOVASCULAR, OR SKIN TISSUE. OF THESE, 1,038 PEOPLE DONATED BONE FOR ORTHOPEDIC PURPOSES. AS THE NUMBER ONE RECOVERY AGENCY FOR OUR HEART VALVE RECOVERY PARTNER, WE FACILITATED THE DONATION OF ANOTHER RECORD-SETTING 401 HEART VALVES AFTER SETTING THE PREVIOUS RECORD IN 2021 WITH 394 HEART VALVES PROCURED. HEART VALVES ARE MOST FREQUENTLY TRANSPLANTED IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS. THERE WERE ALSO 687 SAPHENOUS OR FEMORAL VEINS DONATED IN 2022. THE GENEROSITY OF 922 PEOPLE RESULTED IN DONATED SKIN FOR BURN VICTIMS AND RESTORATIVE PROCEDURES. THE 1,293 DONORS ALSO DONATED OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR AND ORTHOPEDIC TISSUES, INCLUDING TISSUES USED TO DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF REJECTION IN ORGAN RECIPIENTS.IN ADDITION, 745 PEOPLE DONATED CORNEAS THAT RESULTED IN 897 CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS, OF WHICH MANY WERE PROVIDED GRATIS OR AT NOMINAL COST TO PATIENTS WHO COULD OTHERWISE NOT AFFORD A TRANSPLANT. THESE DONORS ALSO DONATED SCLERA FOR TRANSPLANTATION PURPOSES.
DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AT DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA IS ENCOMPASSED BY TWO DEPARTMENTS, HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE. HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAXIMIZING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DONORS RECOVERED FOR TRANSPLANT IN ARIZONA THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INDIVIDUALIZED DONOR PROGRAMS BASED ON COMPREHENSIVE HOSPITAL ASSESSMENT, ANALYSIS OF THE DONOR POTENTIAL, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ONGOING QUALITY PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND INITIATION AND FOSTERING OF EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY.DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA (DNA) CONTINUES TO UTILIZE THE BEST PRACTICES AS DEFINED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES' BREAKTHROUGH COLLABORATIVES FOR ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION. THIS INCLUDES ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN REGIONAL AND NATIONAL IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS. THESE EFFORTS CONTINUE TO HELP US MAXIMIZE CONVERSION RATES, DONORS AND THE NUMBER OF ORGANS TRANSPLANTED PER DONOR IN ARIZONA. IN ADDITION TO ONGOING EDUCATION IN ARIZONA HOSPITALS AND HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS, DNA HOLDS AN ALL-HOSPITAL SYMPOSIUM EVERY OTHER YEAR.SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2022 INCLUDE:- IMPLEMENTED EXPANDED CLINICAL TRIGGERS IN ALL ARIZONA HOSPITALS, THE CLINICAL INDICATORS THAT IT IS TIME FOR A HOSPITAL TO REFER A POTENTIAL ORGAN DONOR. - THE EXPANDED CLINICAL TRIGGERS ARE IN RESPONSE TO MEDICAL RECORD REVIEW FINDINGS AND MISSED DONOR TRENDS. ROLL OUT INCLUDED RESEARCH, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PILOT PROGRAM, RE-EDUCATION OF HOSPITAL STAFF AND RE-ENGINEERING HOW WE FOLLOW POTENTIAL ORGAN DONORS. - FORMALLY TRAINED HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM STAFF TO SEE ACTIVE POTENTIAL ORGAN REFERRALS IN RESPONSE TO INCREASED REFERRAL VOLUME DUE TO NEW CLINICAL TRIGGERS.- DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED A NEW PHYSICIAN WELCOME KIT FOR PHYSICIANS NEW TO LARGE DONOR HOSPITALS TO ENSURE THEY ARE ORIENTED TO ORGAN DONATION IN ARIZONA.- CONTINUED IN PERSON EDUCATION WITH OVER 200 EDUCATION EVENTS AS THERE WAS OPPORTUNITY INCLUDING VIRTUAL CLASSES AND QUARTERLY DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION WEBINARS. DNA ALSO CONTINUES TO PROVIDE CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS THROUGH THE CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION GROUP (CNEG) FOR THE ADVANCED DONOR NURSE CLASS. BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE: THE BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IDENTIFYING, FORMULATING, IMPLEMENTING, AND EVALUATING HIGH-QUALITY, DATA DRIVEN DECISION CAPABILITIES AND PROCESS IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER LEADERS AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA'S STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES. THIS DEPARTMENT INCLUDES DATA SYSTEMS AND ANALYTICS AND DATA INTELLIGENCE TEAMS WHICH COLLECT AND PRESENT DATA NEEDED FOR OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND TO PROVIDE FLEXIBLE DATA SOLUTIONS TO MEET ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS. THIS DEPARTMENT IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING THE DEATH RECORD REVIEW AND HOSPITAL DEATH REPORT AUDIT PROCESSES, AS WELL AS OVERSEEING ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD (EMR) SYSTEMS IN ARIZONA HOSPITALS FOR DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA STAFF. 2022 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:- DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED THE MULTI-DEPARTMENTAL ONEBOARD.THE ONEBOARD IS A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN THE WAY THAT OUR CLINICAL OPERATIONS FOLLOW ORGAN DONATION REFERRALS. IT ALLOWS FOR DATA AT THE FINGERTIPS OF ON CALL LEADERS AS OPPOSED TO SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE EMR. IT ALLOWS DECISION MAKERS TO PAY ATTENTION TO CASES AS THEY ARE TRIAGED TOWARD POSSIBLE FAMILY CONVERSATIONS.- CREATION OF A NEW EXCEPTION REPORTING FRAMEWORK CALL REDBOARD.THE REDBOARD ALLOWS ALL DEPARTMENTS IN REAL-TIME TO BETTER MONITOR AND RESPOND TO INCORRECTLY ENTERED OR INCONGRUENT DATA IN DNA'S EMR.- FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AUTOMATED DEATH RECORD REVIEW PROCESS ON OVER 85% OF HOSPITAL DEATHS.THE NEW HOSPITAL DEATH RECORD AND ICD10 CODE ASSESSMENT SYSTEM IS NOW ESTIMATED TO SAVE APPROXIMATELY 70% OF THE TIME OF THE PREVIOUS MANUAL PROCESS, WHILE ELIMINATING THE VAST MAJORITY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR USER ERROR.- COMPLETED A RE-WRITE OF THE DATA WAREHOUSE, SUPPORTING ALL NEW REPORTING AT DNA.
