SCIENCE OUR SCIENTIFIC WORK IS TARGETED TO FOUR KEY AREAS, RESTORATION, INVASIVE NON-NATIVE SPECIES, HABITAT CONNECTIVITY AND PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY. IN ALL FOUR AREAS WE ARE COMPLETING LEADING EDGE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WITHIN THE MCDOWELL SONORAN PRESERVE IN ADDITION TO PLAYING A REGIONAL LEADERSHIP ROLE. ARID LAND AMOUNTS TO ALMOST 40 OF THE PLANET BUT IS THE LEAST RESEARCHED. OUR WORK ENGAGES SCIENTISTS, CITIZEN SCIENTISTS AND OUR COMMUNITIES IN APPRECIATING THE RISKS IN ADDITION TO UNDERSTANDING WHAT STEPS WE CAN ALL TAKE TO MITIGATE THESE THREATS.
EDUCATION OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TARGET FOUR GROUPS, YOUTH, ADULTS, FAMILIES AND OUR VOLUNTEERS. COVID-19 FORCED US TO PIVOT TO ONLINE OFFERINGS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO ENSURE WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL AND IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCES. INFUSING OUR SCIENTIFIC WORK INTO OUR EDUCATION REMAINS CORE TO ENGAGING EVERYONE IN CONSERVATION. OUR YOUTH PROGRAMMING HAS BEEN REDESIGNED TO DELIVER THE NEW ARIZONA SCIENCE STANDARDS, PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. THROUGH OUR IN-PERSON AND ONLINE PROGRAMS, WE CONNECT WITH OVER 20,000 YOUTH ANNUALLY.
STEWARDSHIP OUR 700 VOLUNTEERS CONTINUED TO DELIVER IN-PERSON PROGRAMS UNTIL COVID-19 CAUSED US TO PAUSE. THIS INCLUDED OVER 150 FREE PUBLIC GUIDED HIKES AND BIKE RIDES, PROVIDING TRAILHEAD AMBASSADORS AND EDUCATING YOUTH AND FAMILIES IN THE MCDOWELL SONORAN PRESERVE. THROUGH COVID-19 WE CONTINUED MAINTAINING 230 MILES OF TRAILS, BEING TRAIL AMBASSADORS AND OUR FULL RANGE OF CITIZEN SCIENCE ACTIVITIES. ADDITIONALLY, WE CONTINUED OUR TWO NEWEST PROGRAMS,PROTECTING THE HISTORIC SITES WITHIN THE PRESERVE AND THE PARTNERING WITH FIRE DEPARTMENT ON THEIR FIREWISE PROGRAM. OUR STEWARDS CONTRIBUTED OVER 60,000 HOURS, VALUED AT OVER 1.6M OR 53 FULL TIME STAFF.
