WOMEN IN NEUROSCIENCE IS BUILDING A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF WOMEN LEADERS IN NEUROSCIENCE AND NEUROLOGY THROUGH STUDENT INTERNSHIPS, MENTORSHIP, AND SCHOLARSHIPS.

WOMEN IN NEUROSCIENCE (WIN) SPONSORS YOUNG WOMEN TO PARTICIPATE IN PAID, 8-WEEK INTERNSHIPS WORKING WITH SCIENTISTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE AND THE DELL MEDICAL SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY. OUR INTERNSHIPS BUILD A PIPELINE OF HIGHLY QUALIFIED, DEDICATED FEMALE PROFESSIONALS IN THESE FIELDS AND OFFER AN ENTRY POINT TO A LIFETIME COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT. IN 2021 WE PROVIDED SEVENTEEN PAID INTERNSHIPS WHICH BROUGHT OUR NUMBER OF TOTAL STUDENTS SERVED TO THIRTY-SEVEN. WE FOCUS ON BRINGING IN HISTORICALLY EXCLUDED POPULATIONS INTO OUR PROGRAM. THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THIS YEARS INTERNSHIP WAS AS FOLLOWS: 47% BLACK STUDENTS, 35% LATINA STUDENTS, 11% ASIAN STUDENTS AND 6% WHITE STUDENTS. THREE OF OUR INTERNS WERE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. KEY ASPECTS OF WIN'S INTERNSHIPS INCLUDE WORKING WITH A SCIENTIST, GAINING ACCESS TO LAB EXPERIENCE, AND RECEIVING ONE-ON-ONE ADVISING AND GUIDANCE FROM FACULTY HOSTS. WE ALSO OFFER SEMINARS ON THE BASICS OF RESEARCH, DAILY SPEAKERS FROM DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE NEUROLOGICAL FIELDS, AND COACHING IN WRITING, SPEAKING, AND LEADERSHIP. AFTER THEIR INTERNSHIPS ARE FINISHED, WE CONTINUE TO ENGAGE WITH THE STUDENTS OFFERING ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS.
