DAR-US-SAKINA IS A 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO INCLUSION OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF HOUSTON. OUR PLATFORM IS A SAFE SPACE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL ABILITIES AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. WE INSPIRE THE COMMUNITY TO ABANDON STIGMAS AND EMBRACE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES WITH EMPATHY AND RESPECT. TOGETHER, WE ARE BETTER.

Part 3 - Line 4a
1-DAR-US-SAKINA INITIATED A WEEKLY PROGRAM FOR TEENS AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES, IN WHICH PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE INVALUABLE LIFE SKILLS TRAINING IN AN INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENT. MONTHLY THEMES HAVE RANGED FROM PHYSICAL FITNESS TO COOKING AND SOCIAL SKILLS. IN THIS PROGRAM, DAR-US-SAKINA HAS PARTNERED WITH LOCAL VENDORS TO BRING THE EXPERTISE NEEDED FOR SUCCESSFUL ACQUISITION OF SKILLS IN PREPARING THEM FOR THE REAL WORLD. 2- DAR-US-SAKINA LAUNCHED A SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR LOW INCOME SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILIES, MANY OF WHOM ARE REFUGEES AND/OR HAVE SIGNIFICANT LANGUAGE BARRIERS. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, ELIGIBLE SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILIES HAVE RECEIVED DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, ASSISTANCE WITH EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY AND PLACEMENT, RESPITE CARE AND COUNSELING SERVICES. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS AND IS MUCH NEEDED IN THE LOCAL HOUSTON COMMUNITY. 3- DAR-US-SAKINA CONDUCTED QUARTERLY LARGE SCALE EVENTS DESIGNED FOR SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILIES TO BE INCLUDED AND SUPPORTED BY THE HOUSTON COMMUNITY. THESE EVENTS WERE FULLY ACCESSIBLE AND ACCOMMODATING, CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR CAREGIVERS TO RELAX AND SOCIALIZE. THESE EVENTS SERVED AN ADDITIONAL PURPOSE OF PROMOTING DISABILITY AWARENESS, IN THAT LARGE NUMBERS OF VOLUNTEERS WERE RECRUITED FROM THE COMMUNITY AND AWARENESS TRAINED PRIOR TO ASSISTING AT THE EVENTS.
