THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT AIMS TO CHAMPION THE VOICE OF THE BLACK DESCENDANT COMMUNITY WHILE DEMANDING ACTION THAT SUPPORTS THEIR TOTAL WELL-BEING.

Part 3 - Line 4a

HURRICANE IDA REFLIEF THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT COLLECTED, ORGANIZED, AND/OR DISTRIBUTED FOOD, SUPPLIES, HURRICANE RECOVERY ITEMS SUCH AS TARPS, ROOFING NAILS, ETC. TO THE ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH COMMUNITY. WE HELD FOUR SEPARATE DISTRIBUTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY AND ORGANIZED ROOFING REPAIR OF AT LEAST 20 HOMES. WE ASSISTED IN ACQUIRING FEMA TRAILERS FOR COMMUNITY MEEMBERS AND ARE STILL ORGANIZING TREE REMOVAL FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT WAS AWARDED A GRANT TO HOST A FILM INDUSTRY TRAINING PROGRAM AS PART OF OUR EFFECTS TO INTRODUCE THE COMMUNITY TO ALTERNATIVE CAREERS OUTSIDE OF PETROCHEMICAL AND HEAVY INDUSTRY. WE HAVE HELD TWO WORKSHOPS AND WERE ABLE TO PLACE 4 ATTENDEES ON FILM PROJECTS.


ADVOCATING AND EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ON THE DANGERS OF HEAVY INDUSTRY POLLUTION AND POTENTIAL INDUSTRIAL HAZARDS. BRINGING INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION AND AWARENESS TO AND FACILITATING PROGRESS IN OUR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND OTHER COMMUNITY MATTERS.


THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT HAS BEEN ABLE TO AMPLIFY THE PROTECTION OF THE WALLACE, LA DESCENDANT COMMUNITIES AND ARE WORKING WITH ARCHAEOLOGISTS, RESEARCHERS, HISORIANS, ETC. TO HAVE THE COMMUNITY LISTED AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND TO PROTECT THE BURIAL GROUNDS OF THE ENSLAVED. WE HAVE RECEIVED NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION FOR OUR EFFORTS INCLUDING ALMOST 2 DOZEN ARTICLES ABOUT OUR WORK IN PRESERVING THE HISTORY, CULTURE, AND ENVIRONMENT FOR THE DESCENDANT COMMUNITY. WE ENGAGE IN IDENTIFYING AND MEMORIALIZING THE BURIAL GROUNDS.
