Part 3

REVISIONARY ARTS HAD FOUR MAJOR PROGRAMS IN 2021 NAMELY JEWISH FAMILY AND CHILDREN'S SERVICES, ARIZONA CAREGIVER COALITION, COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS SERIES AND UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA BIOMEDICAL CAMPUS-PHOENIX. JEWISH FAMILY AND CHILDREN'S SERVICES - RA FACILITATED TWO THERAPEUTIC SESSIONS FOR JFCS, EACH LASTING 8 WEEKS. THESE THERAPEUTIC WORKSHOPS PRIMARILY SERVE THE 65 AND OLDER POPULATION, MANY OF WHOM ARE GRAPPLING WITH ILLNESS, ISOLATION, DEPRESSION, DISABILITY, CAREGIVING/HOSPICE OF A LOVED ONE, AND OTHER PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. OUR LEAD FACILITATOR IS THE SOLE FACILITATOR OF THESE WORKSHOPS GIVEN THEIR DEMAND FOR CONSISTENCY, ESPECIALLY IN ACHIEVING THE CREATION OF A SAFE SPACE AND A COMMUNITY OF SUFFERERS. DATA COLLECTED FROM THESE WORKSHOPS REVEALS A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF BONDING AMONG PARTICIPANTS, MANY OF WHOM FORGE RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST WELL BEYOND THE WORKSHOPS. IN THIS SENSE, WE'RE VERY MUCH FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF AA/NA-WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE TOOLS THAT WE GIVE PARTICIPANTS HAVE TO BE MAINTAINED/USED OUTSIDE THE CONTEXT OF OUR WORKSHOPS, AND THE ONGOING COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT CREATES BOTH ACCOUNTABILITY AND MOTIVATION. ARIZONA CAREGIVER COALITION - RA FACILITATED QUARTERLY WORKSHOPS FOR THIS AZ-BASED NONPROFIT THAT SUPPORTS CAREGIVERS, MANY OF WHOM ARE CARING FOR SPOUSES, PARENTS, AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS. AGAIN, THIS IS A POPULATION FOR WHOM CONSISTENCY MATTERS, SO WE HAVE A DEDICATED FACILITATOR (WHO'S ALSO A FULL-TIME CAREGIVER) AT THE HELM OF THIS PARTNERSHIP. OUR GOAL HERE IS TO CREATE A SPACE WHERE CAREGIVERS CAN FEEL SEEN, SUPPORTED, AND BE HONEST WITH THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER, SOMETHING CAREGIVERS RARELY FEEL ABLE TO DO WITH OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS/CLOSE FRIENDS. DESPITE THE INCREASED SUPPORT FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS DURING THE PANDEMIC, CAREGIVERS HAVE REMAINED OVERBURDENED AND UNDER-RECOGNIZED BY BOTH SOCIETY AND THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. A STUDY PUBLISHED IN JUNE 2021 BY THE CDC REPORTED THAT "ABOUT 70 PERCENT OF PARENTS AND ADULT CAREGIVERS - SUCH AS THOSE TENDING TO OLDER PEOPLE, FOR EXAMPLE - AND ABOUT 85 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO WERE BOTH [PARENT AND CAREGIVER] REPORTED ADVERSE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS DURING THE PANDEMIC, VERSUS ABOUT A THIRD OF PEOPLE WHO DID NOT HOLD THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES." CAREGIVERS WHO ATTENDED OUR WORKSHOPS SAID IT RENEWED THEIR INTEREST IN REFLECTIVE WRITING, MEDIATION, COMMUNAL SHARING, AND THE READING OF POETRY, ALL OF WHICH WE RECOMMEND AS "ONGOING TREATMENT." COMMUNITY WORKSHOP SERIES - BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER 2020, OUR MONTHLY OPEN-TO-THE-COMMUNITY THERAPEUTIC POETRY WORKSHOPS WAS RA'S FIRST PROGRAM. IT MEETS ON THE THIRD SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH VIA ZOOM AND SERVES ANYWHERE FROM 12-25 PEOPLE. WE ROTATE OUR FACILITATORS (AND INTERNS) FOR THIS SERIES SO THAT EACH SESSION IS DIFFERENT AND NEW. SOME WORKSHOPS ARE THEMED, SOME COMBINE POETRY WITH OTHER COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES SUCH AS MUSIC AND DRAWING (EVEN ANIMALS/PETS) TO AUGMENT THE THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS. WE'VE COLLECTED DATA FROM THESE WORKSHOPS SINCE DEC. 2020, AND PARTICIPANTS HAVE REPORTED A GREATER SENSE OF WELL-BEING FOLLOWING OUR WORKSHOPS, A SENSE OF FELLOWSHIP - I.E. A SHARED COMMUNITY OF SUFFERERS - GREATER INSIGHT INTO THEIR GRIEF/TRAUMA AS WELL AS THEIR RELATIONSHIPS, AND A HEIGHTENED ABILITY TO FIND PEACE AND HEALING. UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA BIOMEDICAL CAMPUS-PHOENIX - THIS PARTNERSHIP WAS FORGED BY RA'S FOUNDING DIRECTOR BEFORE RA WAS INCORPORATED, SO RA WAS "GRANDFATHERED" INTO SEVERAL PROGRAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA (UA) INCLUDING GRAND ROUNDS (THE FRIDAY MORNING MEETING FOR ALL FACULTY AND AFFILIATED PHYSICIANS), THE SHARE YOUR VOICE DRIVE, THE LIVING LIBRARY, THE FIRST/SECOND YEAR NARRATIVE MEDICINE COHORT (COMPRISED OF MED STUDENTS WHO WE TRAIN IN THE ART OF POETRY THERAPY), THE JOURNAL OF THE NARRATIVE MEDICINE PROGRAM (CHART), AND THE MEDICAL POETRY JOURNAL, GREY MATTER. THROUGH THIS PARTNERSHIP, RA INTERACTED WITH AROUND 100 PHYSICIANS AND DOZENS (IF NOT A HUNDRED) MEDICAL STUDENTS. WE WERE CONTINUALLY CALLED UPON TO PROVIDE MORE TRAININGS, LECTURES, WORKSHOPS, AND COLLABORATIONS, AND OUR LIST OF STUDENT INTERNS CONTINUED TO GROW.
