FOCUS FOR DEMOCRACY: WE MADE GRANTS TOTALING $1,553,129 TO EIGHT ORGANIZATIONS SO THAT THEY COULD EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND POLICY-MAKERS ABOUT THE NEED FOR POLICIES THAT PROTECT DEMOCRACY, INCLUDING VOTING RIGHTS. RECIPIENTS USED A VARIETY OF TACTICS, RANGING FROM EVENTS THAT DREW FREE MEDIA ATTENTION TO TELEVISION AND DIGITAL ADS AND DIRECT CONVERSATIONS WITH POLICY-MAKERS ON THE SUBJECT. GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT WERE NOT 501(C) ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING RESTRICTIONS: THAT THE ORGANIZATION SHALL APPLY THE GRANT FOR CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES THAT QUALIFY UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE (?CODE?), THAT THE ORGANIZATION AGREES THAT NO FUNDS THAT IT RECEIVES FROM REGISTER2 VOTE FUND ("R2V") AS PART OF THIS GRANT WILL BE USED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY POLITICAL CAMPAIGN ON BEHALF OF OR IN OPPOSITION TO ANY CANDIDATE FOR PUBLIC OFFICE NOR WILL IT USE ANY FUNDS IT RECEIVES FROM R2V AS PART OF THIS GRANT BE USED TO INFLUENCE THE OUTCOME OF ANY SELECTION, NOMINATION, ELECTION, OR APPOINTMENT OF ANY INDIVIDUAL TO ANY PUBLIC OFFICE OR OFFICE OF A POLITICAL ORGANIZATION WITHIN THE MEANING OF SECTION 527(E)(2) OF THE CODE, AND THAT THE FUNDS ARE NOT EARMARKED FOR ANY SPECIFIC LOBBYING ACTIVITIES AS DEFINED UNDER ANY FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LAWS. THE LEADERS OF OUR SPONSORED PROJECT, FOCUS FOR DEMOCRACY, EXERCISED DILIGENCE, PRIMARILY THROUGH FREQUENT PHONE CONVERSATIONS AND EMAILS WITH GRANTEES TO ENSURE THAT THE ORGANIZATIONS WERE COMPLYING WITH THESE RESTRICTIONS.
BLOCKPOWER: BLOCK POWER IS A NON-PARTISAN INITIATIVE OF REGISTER2VOTE FUND. BLOCKPOWER FOCUSED ON BUILDING HEALTH, WEALTH, AND POWER IN TRADITIONALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. BLOCKPOWER DEVELOPED A PLATFORM TO HELP ORGANIZATIONS CREATE NETWORKS OF OVER 1,000 "COMMUNITY AMBASSADORS" WHO TALK TO THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, AND NEIGHBORS ABOUT HOW TO MAKE THEIR COMMUNITIES BETTER.
VOTER REGISTRATION MAIL PROGRAM: IN 2021, REGISTER2VOTE FUND (R2V FUND) WORKED TO REGISTER VOTERS BY IDENTIFYING VOTERS WHO HAVE MOVED BUT HAVE NOT YET UPDATED THEIR VOTER REGISTRATIONS. R2V FUND MAILED THESE VOTERS VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS AND/OR DIRECTED THEM TO THEIR STATE ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION WEBSITES, AS APPROPRIATE FOR EACH JURISDICTION. ONE OF THESE PROGRAMS, FOR EXAMPLE WAS IN NORTH CAROLINA, WHERE R2V FUND IDENTIFIED 8,500 YOUNG VOTERS IN WAKE COUNTY WHO WERE NOT REGISTERED AT THEIR CURRENT ADDRESS.
