THE MISSION OF JAZZ ASPEN SNOWMASS IS TO PRESENT AND PRESERVE JAZZ AND RELATED FORMS OF MUSIC THROUGH WORLD-CLASS FESTIVALS, PERFORMANCES AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

FESTIVALS AND PERFORMANCES INCLUDE THE JAS CAFE SERIES, JUNE EXPERIENCE AND LABOR DAY EXPERIENCE. DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, JAS DIDN'T HOLD ANY WINTER CAFE PERFORMANCES IN 2021 BUT CAME BACK STRONG THAT SUMMER WITH A FULL LINE-UP OF 16 CAFE SHOWS, THE JUNE EXPERIENCE FEATURING 18 JAZZ ARTISTS OVER A 3-DAY FESTIVAL, AND THE LABOR DAY EXPERIENCE, JAS' LARGEST FESTIVAL, WITH NEARLY 25K IN ATTENDANCE OVER THE 3-DAY WEEKEND. THE JAS CAFE AND JUNE EXP TAKE PLACE IN SMALL VENUES IN DOWNTOWN ASPEN HIGHLIGHTING JAZZ & RELATED FORMS OF MUSIC WHILE FEATURING ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE. ALONG WITH PERFORMANCES, THE CAFES OFFER MUSIC EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH LISTEN UP! PRE-SHOW DISCUSSIONS WHERE ARTISTS ARE INTERVIEWED ABOUT THEIR MUSICAL BACKGROUNDS AND EXPERIENCES.
THE JAS ACADEMY EXPANDED IN 2021 TO INCLUDE TWO 2-WEEK SUMMER SESSIONS VS. THE ONE SESSION THAT HAD BEEN DONE IN PREVIOUS YEARS. WITH THE ADDITION JAS WELCOMED 44 STUDENTS FROM SOME OF THE TOP MUSIC SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO WORK WITH FACULTY FROM THE FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, AS WELL AS VISITING PROFESSIONAL JAZZ MUSICIANS. THE ACADEMY IS A FULL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTED ANNUALLY BY A MULTI-YEAR GIFT FROM ED AND SASHA BASS.
LOCAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES PROVIDED OVER $150,000 IN SUPPORT TO LOCAL PUBLIC MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS, REACHING 13 SCHOOLS AND OVER 1,300 STUDENTS. THESE DONATIONS INCLUDED OVER 500 HOURS OF IN-CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS; PRIVATE MUSIC LESSON FUNDING; MULTIPLE INSTRUMENT DONATIONS TO BOTH SCHOOLS AS WELL AS TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS IN NEED OF THE FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION; SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS FOR GRADUATING SENIORS AND MORE.
