PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF COLONIAL AND EARLY AMERICAN SETTLEMENT IN THE ILLINOIS COUNTRY.

ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL MANDATES OF THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION IS TO PRODUCE A PUBLICATION SERIES, IN BOTH PRINT AND DIGITAL MEDIUMS. THE FIRST PRINT PUBLICATION, THE MATERIAL WORLD OF THE KASKASKIA, WAS RELEASED THIS YEAR. THIS VOLUME PUBLISHES FOR THE FIRST TIME INFORMATION CONCERNING OVER 13,000 ARTIFACTS COLLECTED AT A VILLAGE OCCUPIED BY THE KASKASKIA TRIBE OF THE ILLINOIS FROM 1721 THROUGH THE 1770S.


ANOTHER PRINCIPAL ELEMENT OF THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE ONLINE ACCESS TO ARCHIVAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATA, FOR USE BY SCHOLARS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE WEBSITE WAS COMPLETED IN EARLY 2022, BUT WAS REBUILT ON A NEW AND IMPROVED PLATFORM AND SERVER MID-YEAR. RECENT UPDATES INCLUDE COLONIAL ILLINOIS CHURCH RECORDS, READINGS FROM 17TH CENTURY FRENCH-ILLINOIS DICTIONARIES, AND NEW INFORMATION CONCERNING 17TH CENTURY FORTIFICATIONS ON THE ILLINOIS RIVER.


THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESEARCH LIBRARY WAS A MISSION-RELATED TASK ADDRESSED BY THE FOUNDATION THIS YEAR. OVER 50 VOLUMES WERE PURCHASED OR RECEIVED AS DONATIONS AND ADDED TO THE LIBRARY THIS YEAR. THESE PURCHASES INCLUDE OLDER, OUT OF PRINT TITLES NEEDED TO FILL IN GAPS IN THE COLLECTION AS WELL AS RECENTLY PUBLISHED TITLES. AN IMPORTANT ADDITION WAS THE 28-VOLUME SET OF DIDEROT'S ENCYCLOPEDIA. ALSO ADDED TO THE RESEARCH LIBRARY WAS NEW RESEARCH MATERIALS (CULLED FROM REGIONAL ARCHIVES) CONCERNING COLONIAL PEORIA AND FORT DE CHARTRES IN RANDOLPH COUNTY.
